Snacks for me

I need some ideas. I am trialling a dairy-free diet for a couple of weeks, since I think that DD3 (4 weeks today) may be sensitive to something I'm eating. Dairy is a prime suspect, since it seems to run in our family; DD2 was very sensitive to it (at least pasteurized), as well as my niece and nephew are both intolerant to anything pasteurized. SO, I'm going to start there and see how she does, and then move on to other foods if eliminating dairy doesn't do the trick.

Anyway, back to the point of this post, lol. I need some quick and easy snacks for me, since I feel like a bottomless pit these days. I haven't done a lot of cooking lately, so leftovers are not a really good option at this point.

Can you devote a little time on the weekends to veggie prep? Cut veggies make good snacks.

Fruit-most even comes in it's own wrapper!

Beef jerky - again, takes a little prep time. I've got a huge batch in the dehydrator right now, but I used to do it in the oven on low before I got my dehydrator.

nuts, seeds, dried fruit - make up some trail mix, throw in some dark chocolate chunks (just because they're yummy) easy and portable

-My pemmican from US Wellness Meats should be here any minute. I'm testing it out as an emergency food and hoping to use it as a healthy snacking food with tons of calories!

-Do you have any local shops that sell TF foods? We're lucky enough to have a local shop that makes fermented veggies, and I think some of their breads are TF friendly.

-If you can get somebody to make you some TF soup, I find that a big batch will last me about a week.

-If you need to, just take some meat and throw it in the oven. Throw in a potato too. Even if milk is a problem, butter may not be.

Eat eggs, eggs, and more eggs. Make sure that your breakfast is big enough that you feel full afterwards. If not, add another egg. Your baby is eating all your reserves all night. Morning is catch up time.

-Don't even bother cutting up your veggies. Scrub a carrot or zucchini, bite off the end, and go to town.

-Drink coconut milk for the extra fat you're not getting from milk. I've heard that you can put your milk kefir grains in coconut milk as long as you put them back in mammal milk every once in a while.

-Put a note on your door for visitors who want to see the baby that suggests they offer to help. Better yet, have your husband do it. (My midwife gave me one.) It's really hard to try to handle putting that all together with a new babe in the house, and nursing moms eat a TON!

-It's alright to make some compromises. The quality of your breast milk will still be very high even if not all the food you're eating is exactly what you want it to be. Just eat something! And enjoy your new babe.

1-hand typing..

thanks! time is at a premium, because baby is rather high needs so far, plus i have 4 older DC. i love jerky, but i don't think i could manage the prep work right now. i think i will see if my hfs has some. eggs: we love them, so i think i will try to figure out how to eat more during the day. maybe a coconut milk custard or pudding...

Dh has been making me breakfast, thankfully, but he really isn't much for cooking. not really good in the kitchen, lol. he does take the baby in the morning and evening so i can get a few minutes; i might use that time to make, or at least start, something.

and yes, i wake up starving in the morning! i almost always feel like i could eat an entire cow!

i was thinking about getting some deli turkey from the hfs. not perfect, but quick and easy.

thanks for the ideas, i appreciate the suggestions.

egg salad, deviled eggs, hard boiled eggs dipped in sea salt.
celery sticks with nut butter and/or pastured butter on top.
bratwurst quickly cooked with saurkraut and some greens.
easy breakfast- sliced fruit, sausages, a couple eggs.
make a veggie and egg and bacon quiche in advance and eat throughout the week.

Here are some of the things we do"
  • fruit
  • hard boiled eggs
  • smoothies made with coconut milk - you can get a lot of good stuff into a smoothie
  • soups/stews/roasts in the crock pot - you can prep when you have a few minutes (I usually toss everything in right after breakfast when everyone is happy), then turn it on and at dinner it's ready to go
  • muffins with butter or nut butter

omg. at 4 weeks pp i was hungry all. the. time. for real, its totally normal. i did indulge a lot in "healthy" whole wheat baked goods though, which looking back probably is why i had a hard time losing the last 15lbs of baby weight, so i would necessarily advice that diet, lol.

Salamai or ham rolled with a pickle
coconut yogurt
bacon wrapped in sprouted corn tortilla with salsa-my personal fave
You could make a big batch of zucchini bread or muffins
apple/banana dipped in cashew butter/almond butter
sweet potato but you're not doing butter so maybe with coconut oil

Oh, the salivary glands are working overtime! I am going to try to get some stuff made up while I have help this week. I have a friend coming in for the week while DH is traveling, and she is a good and creative cook. I am hoping that I'll be able to get some snacky type foods together.

I'm currently attached to a 9 week old. Here are my ideas:
Good old apple & peanut butter. Speaking of PB, I figured out that a spoonful is a great middle-of-the-night-mommy and baby need to eat snack. Not sweet. Just filling enough.
Hard boiled eggs
Liverwurst and beef sticks (our butcher calls these braunsweiger and landjaeger).
Coconut milk straight from the can (the other night I dipped skinny pieces of 91% chocolate in it. Oh wow.
Carrot sticks. Ants on a log.
Salami

haven't had braunsweiger in years. I am getting a bunch of eggs tomorrow, and will hardboil a dozen then, I think. I am also thinking about turning a can of coconut milk into a custard. And, I think I will have time to stop at the health food store tomorrow, so I'll check for jerky, as well as a few other items.

And, yes, I am really curious about how the pemmican tastes. I have this image (idea?) that it tastes like tallow, lol. Is that accurate?

I got all three kinds. I've only tried the plain so far. I wanted to try the least seasoned one first so that I wouldn't get addicted to the sweet kind. I'd rather not be eating a lot of honey and cherries. The first day, I just ate one bite, and it was terrible! I think it was just a clash of expectations and reality. I knew that it wasn't going to be sweet, that only the sweetened kind would be sweet, but my taste buds were still hoping.

I've been eating a little every day since, and it's growing on me. I guess it's not something that I'd say, "Well, if you're hungry, eat some pemmican," but if you get used to it, I think you'd enjoy it. I'm sure the sweetened kind is a little more the kind of thing that most people would like. It's still a little fatty for my taste (I like my fat more absorbed), and they don't get all the water out of the beef, so it has to be refrigerated. It's definitely something I'd consider keeping around... maybe making myself so that it's shelf stable.

There are no nutrition facts except ingredients, so I can't tell for sure. The website claims that it's low-carb, and it doesn't taste really sugary. I think it's pretty good, actually. Too bad they don't get all the water out (and actually add water to this bar according to the ingredients), so it's not shelf stable. Even if it were, at room temperature, it's a gooey mess.
