Is my baby weird?

Well, I know she's pretty odd, rotfl, it's genetic, but wonderng if this is a normal phase or just my odd little child:

She is OBSESSED with putting things into or out of containers. Like for example putting blocks into a pail, then taking them out one by one and putting them on the floor in a very deliberate manner (THIS one definitely goes HERE), then-- repeat. Over and over again, with great concentration and focus. She'll do it for a good 20 minutes, then move on to another container and another set of small toys and put them in and take them out for a while. It's kind of funny because she is so serious and intense about it, sometimes stopping to study one particular block and then setting it down very purposefully and continuing on. But strange just because of the attention span involved, I guess.

Is this something all babies do? She's 12 months.

That actually sounds pretty normal to me. At this age, putting objects in and out of containers is very developmentally appropriate. And, the little ones love that they have this control--they can take things out, put them where they want, and the objects stay where they are put! It's pretty fascinating to a little one who, just weeks ago, didn't even have object permenance! : Your baby girl sounds like she's really enjoying her "work"!

Darcy just started doing this today! And she'll be turning one in a few days. DS and I were doing threading, and Darcy started putting all the buttons in the glass jar, tipping them out, then doing it all over again. So cute!

Sweet.

New question: When do you stop fretting about every little thing?

My daughter is 13 months and has been doing the same. Must be the age! She takes her dirty clothes out of her hamper one by one and puts them back.. same with toys and moving them to containers.

I think it depends on you, Mama. Haha. I am the type to not worry.. so unless DS is upset about something, I usually don't worry about him.

Oh...I hovered over your post and when I clicked it I was hoping you'd asked "is is weird that my baby is obsessed with putting FUZZ and LINT and every little scrap of junk she finds on the floor into her mouth?!?" Because that's MY weird-o baby. Pretty much 9 times out of 10 she is mouthing something, like a hunk of Berber carpet she pulled from the threshold of our bedroom doorway. (p.s. if this is NOT normal, please tell me!)

p.s. mine obsessively empties, too. (Can't wait for the day when she will fold things and put them away!) So we have lots of empty shelves now.

Liam is the same way with eating things off the floor. He is getting better though in the last few months! The funny thign is, he always tells on himself.. he will put something in his mouth he isn't supposed to (not food) and say "MMMM!!!"

I was reading this thread and laughing. Our DD is 8.5 months, and she also has the opposite problem, she loves pulling movies and books off shelves, clothes out of her dresser, etc. In fact, I was just cleaning her room this weekend, and there was a mess of her toys and clothes on the floor, totally counterproductive!

She also loves to pick up small things off the floor: lint, pine needles, etc. Luckily, she doesn't put it into her mouth!

Mine's been doing that pretty much since she was able to pincer grasp and bring it accurately to her mouth, hahaha. When she first started doing it she would crawl... stop... index finger out... poke, poke... into the mouth. I had about a three-second warning to get over there before whatever-it-was went into her mouth. At least all of that practice means she's a great self-feeder... all I have to do is cut up some fruit, put it on the tray in front of her, and I actually get to eat a meal in peace, it's amazing.

Darcy does exactly the same! She won't eat anything I prepare for her, but she'll eat any old thing she finds on the floor. Her two favourites are stuffing that she's pulled out of a hole in the couch cushion, and dried lumps of playdough under DS's craft table

In about 20 or so years.

Not all babies do this, but some do. My DS was the same way, he had (and still has) a very long attention span. He would often do one task over and over until it was mastered and then move on. Some kids learn by mastering one task at a time and some learn by doing 100 tasks for 3 seconds until each one is learned. Anyway, it's just a personality thing, your baby is perfectly fine.

DS (almost 12 mos) is obsessed with putting objects into containers, and also seeing what size objects will fit through a toy with a hole in it. He cracks me up because he's so serious about it, like a little scientist. I don't remember DD doing all this container stuff, but then they are two very different kids.
