Pain AFTER nursing

This is a new one for me. Today out of the blew my left breast started aching a lot after nursing DD. It was during the night when she was nursing quite a bit. My right one was fine. Also, it doesn't hurt too much while nursing her but afterwards it's pretty bad and aches for awhile. I checked and my nipples aren't cracked or anything. I just ended up refusing to let her nurse on that sad this morning because it hurt too much. Any thoughts on what this could be???

Anybody? It just seems weird to me that it's only after nursing and that it's happening so late in the game (DD is 15 months).

I read somethings about it being the latch but in those cases the nipples should look funny afterwards and that's not the case at all. So I'm really confused here what's going on!

Is it your breast or your nipple? Could it be a vasospasm?

I'm not sure exactly, I think it's more my nipple but my breast aches too. I looked it up but my nipples never turn white after nursing. They just look totally normal...

Have you considered thrush?

Saw this post and was curious ...I'm nursing a 3 month old who is my first, so I have no idea if this is possible in your circumstances... I get some breast pain after nursing that is apparently related to my breasts 'filling' back up quickly. My let downs also can really hurt and it is a similar feeling. Not sure that this could apply this late down the road though... have you checked out kellymom info on breast pain to see if anything applies?

That's always been a sign of Thrush for me (dealing with that now). I know if you google thrush or look in bfing books it will say that a painful nipple and breast AFTER nursing is a sign. For me I always have an achy/painful breast and within a few days my nipple begins to hurt. A few days after that it gets to be really painful, feeling like glass in my nipple (all the while my breast still aching/hurting). My children have never gotten the white patches in their mouths but my pedi says they can still have thrush in their mouth without it.

I'm trying to treat it naturally and think I almost had it licked and then it came back full force, so I'll be heading to the doctor on Monday. You should definately look into that.

Thanks everyone! So it mysteriously disappeared in the last day? It's so weird! But she also seemed to nurse less today. I'm going to keep an eye on it, though and if it starts acting up again I might call my doc to see what she thinks.

Ok, pardon my ignorance but if it is thrush, who should I talk to? My Ob/gyn, the ped?
