made my first batch of cultured veggies...

And I'm scared to try them!!

They've been fermenting for 3 days (wild fermentation style) and starting to get that funky fermented smell and every time I smell them and go to taste them, my stomach turns and I get nervous.

Am I the only not brave one?

(btw, I'm from a German family who has a traditional favorite sauerkraut meal, so I really like it... for some reason I'm nervous about mine!)

What are you fermenting? If you have sauerkraut going and it's only 3 days old it's not ready so it would probably not taste right yet. I have dill pickles going and they are on day 4 and not ready, it's been pretty cool so they are fermenting slowly. I tasted yesterday and if it was my first time I would not have been sure if they were just not done or if they were yucky. lol I think the veggie ferments improve with age in the fridge after the initial room temp phase.

The way I do the taste test on things that scare me is to get a glass of something I like, go to the sink and take a bite... so that if it's gross I can spit it out and rinse my mouth and take a drink quickly... I'm getting better about it though. I tasted my fermented cod liver oil with only water as a rescue drink, lol.
