DD's Bike was stolen...

...from our front porch. With a bike lock-locked around the handlebars but not the porch.

She's (11) and her sister (7) have been riding their bike to and from school for about 2 weeks now-as soon as dd2 learned how to ride her bike. Every.frigging.day. I told her to lock her bike up. Well, of course, it was stolen because she never locks it. I mean-the lock is there. It takes 5 seconds.

So, appropriate consequences? She owes me money for a new lock. If she wants another bike, she has to work for it. (I will probably go in half with her)
Some people think that I'm being mean by making her pay for a new bike. But maybe she'll appreciate it better and take better care of it?

I think making her work for half the bike is a reasonable solution. By working for the bike she will 'feel the ownership' of it.

We tend to appreciate things more when we sacrifice for them.

I am an avid cyclist. So is my daughter. Our bikes cost around $3,000 each. My DD saved and paid $1000 towards hers. She takes VERY good care of it.

We don't have a lot of room, but bikes stay indoors when not at use at our house.

I think having her help pay for it is definitely appropriate.

I'd have her pay for half to replace it. That is fair to both you and her.
