If Scot is a family name, go for it. That is what middle names are for: family stuff, odd sounds, unusual spellings, etc. All the stuff that would disqualify a first name.
Orrin doesn't strike me as too old-fashioned at all. Unusual, but not outlandish.
Ember, on the other hand...sounds like someone you'd run across in a bad fantasy novel. Sorry.
Orrins cool, Ive never heard it... sounds similar to Orville without making me think popcorn.
If its pronounced how it looks you wouldnt have much issue with outlandish misspellings of it... maybe some Orins and some Orrens but family should learn the spelling really fast (as opposed to having a common name with an odd spelling in which case people who have known me for 27 years STILL spell my name wrong)
Wonderful names. Orrin is old, but I like that about it. It's not made-up. Plus it's very similar to very common names (Aidan and family), but different. It will sound modern and old at the same time--classic.
Ember is nice. A little earthy-crunchy, maybe, but not overwhelmingly so. It's a great-sounding name.
Thanks for all the input! Really and truly Ember is not completely sold on me. My hubby OTOH loves it. Mae is also a family name but not necessary to be used, just the only middle name I could think of.
I think Ember will always be correcting people "My name is EM-ber. Not AM-ber." But then again, my Taegan is constantly getting called Tee-gan (even by his nana and papa). He's really just not a Teegan, though.
I knew of an Emberly. Em, Emma, Ember were nicknames. I think it's cute. NOT Mae though-- makes it sound hillbillyish. Orrin is fine, but it reminds me of octopus or the penguin from batman.... not sure why...
I'm with the other posters on the sound of "Mae." It's a pretty name, but it reminds me a lot of countrified names with middle names like "Lou" or "Lee."
What about Ember Maeve? Or Emberly Maeve? I think the V gets the hillbilly right outta there.
i like orrin. not sure about ember. i like it just dont love it kwim? plus they will always be correcting people... but i have to do that with mine name and it isn't a huge deal
I like Orrin. Ember is ok. I think Mae is fine for a middle name. My middle name is May after my Grandma and I don't think it sounds hillbilly. I use middle names for family names not names I love.
