Your favorite dog/pup training resources...

Hello all!

I am looking for great training resources. I'd like to have all my ducks in a row before we bring home our future dog/puppy, whenever that might be. I'd love to hear about your favorite training methods, great books, videos, websites... anything that you have found particularly helpful.

I don't know the age or breed of the dog we will end up adopting, if that makes a difference (we're going with the animal shelter, and are open to the possibilities). Are there resources that are especially good for younger dogs? How about adult dogs?

Thanks!

Oh boy....I have got a ton!!!!

I actually have been meaning to get them all together and see if we can get it stickied, but havent got around to it yet.

First for good background into a dog..how they think, learn, etc. I recommend Bones Would Rain from the Sky by Suzanne Clothier, The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell, and Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson.

Dont Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor is a must read too in my mind....even if yoyu never use clicker training, understanding how and why it works gives so much insight into dogs.

I love Ian Dunbar's Before And After You Get Your Puppy...and its available as a free pdf here

Before
After

I have a ton more I could list, but will start there...I will probably be back later to add more

I like the above selections, though I haven't read Ian Dunbar's stuff (might have to check it out!). I especially loved Suzanne Clothier's book I have to say. Another book that's more of a "how to" is My Smart Puppy. I'm not crazy about the way it's organized but the content is pretty good.

Thanks for the recommendations! I put some of those books on reserve at the library. I'm now reading Ian Dunbar's Before And After You Get Your Puppy, and there is some GREAT stuff in there!

Not really a training resource but I recently read Temple Grandin's "Animals make us human." The second chapter is about dogs and particularly their emotional lives. I thought it was fascinating.

a website ...

This site is run by Ian and Kelly Dunbar but taps into trainers from all over the world. If you are going to turn into a training junky check out everything by Kay Laurence
