I have some ideas for a gift for my midwife and I know there are previous threads on the subject. I was wondering, though, if it's customary to also give a gift to the assistant midwife?
In my case, I will have first met her when she comes to my birth. So I imagine I'll have some small bit of emotional tie to her just by having her at my child's birth but won't have developed a relationship with her over the last months. Would you give a smaller gift or a card or what? I'm not sure I'll see her again after the birth, either. Would you have the gift ready beforehand, have it shipped (seems impersonal), or give it to the primary midwife to pass along?
Also, after telling my midwife that I really want a birth photog. this time around but just couldn't swing the cost, she mentioned a midwife apprentice who is good at photography she could ask to come with. It sounds like the apprentice could count her attendance as part of her education/experience but she would mainly be there for us in the capacity of photographer.
So... if that all works out and the apprentice can be there, I'd like to offer some token of appreciation. What sounds like an appropriate gift? Would you offer to pay her for her photog. services (or maybe that goes against apprenticeship rules)? Or something more along the lines of restaurant certificates or some sort of midwifery type of gift or photography related gift? Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks!
