nattokinase

Thread Starter
Hi,
I'm currently six weeks pregnant, and have been having several spotting/bleeding episodes.

My naturopath has prescribed nattokinase for me due to clotting problems - he says it will dissolve any clots in the placenta.

I trust him for all non-pregnancy matters, but I am nervous to take it because all searches I've done on it during pregnancy say that there isn't any data.

It's derived from natto, which I'm sure that Japanese pregnant women have been eating for centuries, so I'm wondering if it could possibly be teratogenic given the fact that it's from a commonly-consumed food?

Any help would be appreciated.

nattokinase

I have not found many answers to this question myself. I have just come back from the hospital where they have suggested i take Heparin twice a day. I am 21 weeks pregnant, i have a genetic mutation called Factor V Leiden and a protein C deficiency - basically my blood clots really well!!

I would rather not take any blood thinners during my pregnancy, although i can understand my doctors concerns for me - injecting myself twice a day with what is essentially rat poison, just doesn't appeal!

What i have found are these two answers to our questions, although from the same site (http://ek-link.asia/vn/en/productdescription.php?id=132), they kinda contradict themselves.......

Q4: Who is not suitable for the use of nattokinase?

A: 1. Pre and post surgery. 2. Patients who just got stroke are not suitable to consume, because vascular obstruction or blood vessels ruptured need time to recover (patients with vascular obstruction can immediate consume after discharge, patients with vascular rupture can only consume at least 1 month later). 3. For other bloodclot-related diseases, it is advisable to consult doctors. 4. No specific recommendation for children and pregnant women. Doctor consultation is advisable for high blood lipids or bloodclot-related cardiovascular diseases.

Q12: Can pregnant women consume Nattokinase? Why it is abroad stated inedible?

A: Nattokinase has no function as pregnancy nutritional supplement, due to the hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy, the recommendations on nutrition for pregnancy are more conservative, tend to focus on the basic vitamins and mineral supplement, it is not specifically recommended for pregnant women, it is advisable to consult doctors and other professionals. However, pregnant women with constipation phenomenon can consume natto for improvement.

If Natto (nattokinase) can be consumed whilst constipated, would it be any different if consumed whilst not?!

This is as tough choice indeed. If you have found any answers please let me know.

Nattokinase Cautions

Nattokinase has been safely used by the Japanese people for many centuries. It is safe for all ages and there appears to be no limit to the amount that can be safely ingested. However, due to its potent clot busting properties, people who suffer from bleeding disorders, such as haemophiliacs, should not take Nattokinase. Those with ongoing bleeding problems, such as ulcers or recent surgery, should also stay away from Nattokinase. Those who have suffered from intracranial bleeding, or who have nueral surgery or ischemic stroke in the last six months should not take Nattokinase. People with extremely high, uncontrolled blood pressure (systolic blood pressure greater than 200 mmHg or diastolic pressure greater than 110 mmHg) should not take Nattokinase unless under strict medical supervision. Nattokinase should not be taken by persons taking “blood thinning” drugs (anticoagulants, such as aspirin or warfarin [Coumadin®]); As there have been to date no studies showing Nattokinase’s ability to pass throiugh breast milk, pregnant or nursing mothers should consult their physician before using Nattokinase. It is interesting to note, however, that Nattō has been traditionally served to pregnant women in Japan to ensure a healthy newborn.

Hope this helps.xx
