Vomiting once a day (big!), lower appetite, but chipper

Hello Mamas,

I'm de-lurking to ask if anyone can chime in here. This is kinda long- my apologies. But for those kind souls who want to read on....DD is almost 9 months. EBF (breast at home and lunchtime, bottles of EBM at daycare), very few solids as yet. For much of April she (and then me too) has been sick with congestion/cough/ears/sometimes fever. Ped put her on antibiotics and it took a couple rounds of different abx to clear her symptoms (it was the haemophilus bacteria, but not the Hib version). All this may or may not be relevant to the current issue.

Because of the abx, her belly got out of whack, diarrhea, diaper rash, etc. Still going there, even with our regular doses of probiotics. But last Friday I had to bring her home from daycare with 103.5 fever. Visited ped, got more antibiotics since it seemed like perhaps the bug was not fully vanquished. Fever broke, ok. Got the abx on Saturday and gave one dose. Couple hours later, spectacular vomit episode (in the bed, of course). Called ped, since seemed related to the abx dose IMO. Got prescription for different abx. Took that dose Sunday. Within four hours, another big vomit. So I stopped the abx, as I was getting sick of her having to take them anyway.

All fine Monday. Tuesday night, one big vomit. Tonight (Weds), same. I should add - all of these have occurred at night, after the big long nurse-fest that is our bedtime ritual. And, her appetite during the day has been lower than usual (not really taking more than one or part of one bottle at daycare; not nursing as much with me during the day).

She is teething and just figured out crawling. She is perfectly chipper, and in fact, once recovered from the vomit-moment, she gets all goofy and wants to roll around in the bed and play before settling back down. But she is not eating much, especially since she tosses up what amounts to her biggest feed of the day.

The last piece (perhaps) of this puzzle is that papa came down with high fever/chills/vomiting on Sunday. Seemed to clear up by end of the day. But he says his bowels (ahem) are still not right. AND, poor Granny, who babysat Monday night while I had a night class, came down with chills, vomiting and diarrhea yesterday and today.

So it seems like a stomach bug? But she's really only vomiting once a day at most? And having green poop which seems more likely due to the abx messing up her system. And no return of fever? Gah! Any thoughts? I am basically just watching and waiting, but would love to hear from you, esp anyone who's seen a comparable pattern.

Thanks and be well!

You can have all kind of infections that might give you an acute episode of flu-like symptoms but leave persistent GI effects. Is your LO also having diarrhea? If her vomiting is growing milder the she might actually be recovering.

Thanks for your response. She has had some diarrhea, which seemed mainly in response to all the abx. It does seem like this is just a weird lingering GI thing. The once-a-night giant vomit is just mysterious, and a little upsetting when combined with loss of appetite and throwing up the biggest feed of the day.

I'm sure this will pass, but you know how you can drive yourself crazy trying to figure things out? That's me!

Hmm...if the loss of appetite continues you should probably bring your LO back to the doctors and reassess, like maybe she's got something protozoan rather than bacterial and maybe your doctor gave you antibiotics for the latter.

I seem to remember a friend of mine's LO having rotavirus, and vomiting at least once a day for well over a week.

I'm a watch and wait kind of person. If she is chipper, and not dehydrated, I think I'd personally give it a few more days (I'd probably make an appointment for Monday just in case it was still ongoing).

Yes, I wondered about rotavirus, although she's been vaxed for it. But she's nursing well, just not that interested in bottles, and is not dehydrated. The diarrhea from the weekend and early week seems to have passed. It's just the mysterious daily barf.

Watching and waiting, and thanking you mamas for input!
