Disappointed in my ped

Thread Starter
Not the first time a thread like this has been started, but just had to post.
I've been pleased enough with our ped until now. We don't really go to the doctor much; haven't really kept up with "well baby visits", but go to about every other one. Our ped is pretty unremarkable, but until now she has left our son's penis alone. He's 8 months old.
We went to see her today and I was standing right there watching her do her thing, ie wiggle his hips, check his scrotum, etc, and then she proceded to stretch his foreskin back. I said "wait! don't" and she looked at me and said "what? I'm checking to see if it's retractable. his is still really tight" and i wanted to say "of course it is, you moron, he's 8 months old" but instead I don't even know exactly what I said because my I was so flustered.
DS wasn't phased at all, it didn't seem to hurt him at all but it just left me with a pit in my stomach. Are foreskin's so rare that doctors can't help but play with them? Why is proper care not taught in med school? Ugh.
Just want to let all of you mamas know how fast it can happen; that I was standing there to guard against this happening and it STILL happened! I should know better, but she had been kept her hands off of it until now so I thought she new better.

Sounds like you handled it well. You could also provide some publications to your doctor. Teach the doctor what they should already know.

Unfortunately, doctors do not get adequate education in medical school, nor do they focus on this in continuing ed, as far as I can tell. This means they are pretty clueless about foreskins. I suspect many have never even seen a foreskin.

And by trade, doctors are trained to do something, rather than just observe and leave well enough alone. This can result in doctors handling and otherwise doing things when they do not have the proper training to even know that they are causing harm.

You need to take an active role in your health care, especially regarding foreskins. Sad, but true.

Same thing happened to me and many others. I have learned that no matter how good the ped. has been in the past you can never trust them not to pull that stunt. Many wait until a certain age before trying so it often comes out of the blue and it leaves you feels angry, sad and confused.

I took him in the other day for a tick bite and the Dr. actually messed with his penis then though he didnt retract him just moved thing about in a manner that made me uncomfy. Since the visit was for the bite he was checking the lymph glands in the groin for swelling and had his hands on ds's penis before I could even blink

So sorry. This is a reminder that if you are taking your boy to a doctor, tell them not to touch the penis!
