Better check as far as the law. You say you back onto the river. Where does your property end, as far as the river's edge? You can own the
land under the water, but not the water itself. Without water rights, you probably cannot legally do what you want to do.
My husband works for the federal government in natural resources and has had to deal with folks doing just what you would like to do (they have property bordering on federal land water). There are many reasons why this is illegal. I can ask him more information, if you'd like, but it sounds like your situation would be a no-go for your proposed plan.
It sounds like a great idea, but make sure the law says it's okay or you'll be facing stiff penalties for doing that.
