Poll: Is buying maternity clothes before BFP good or bad luck?

My hubby and I are about to start our first cycle on Clomid and doing I.U.I. to get pregnant....should be next week when my period starts.

I've been browsing online at maternity stores and have found some cute stuff. So...my question/poll is....is buying maternity clothing BEFORE you're even pregnant good luck or bad luck?

Is it the type of thing where if I buy a few tops that I like and know will fit me in a few months once it finally does happen that I'm pregnant...and they are hanging in my closet, is that a good or a bad move?

Is it dooming my baby fate? Or helping it along by easing my mind and thus making me less stressed out and easier to achieve pregnancy?

What do you think? What would you do?

neither it's called being prepared i already have a pack of new born nappies and i bought a sleep suit, a little outfit and a snowsuit in the sales. i also have a little white hat and mittens. You WILL need them in a few months anyway, won't you.

I don't think it's "bad luck," but I personally am not buying maternity clothes before I'm pregnant... just in case it takes a long time to conceive, or there is a m/c, I don't want them to be hanging in my closet taking up space and taunting me with their existence!

Neither. Buying maternity clothes will not make you pregnant nor will it cause you to not be pregant. Like the first poster said, it's being prepared. I bought some Old Navy maternity stuff because they were SUPER cheap back in January when I m/c at 5 weeks, because it's nota matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN!!!

I don't think it will doom you, but I live in a climate with big changes in the seasons so it wouldn't be wise to invest in nice maternity stuff I might not use. Of course, I have stuff now I've worn that I've held on to. I did happen to buy finally a few spring outfits at 12 weeks with my last pregnancy and miscarried the next week....

I don't believe in luck so I would say buy the mat. clothes if you want. As PrincessWinnie said, it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when". Enjoy your clothes shopping

That is what happened to me with my first pregnancy....and also a miscarriage at 5 1/2 weeks. I'd bought some maternity clothes, lost my baby and they were hanging in the closet so that every time I even thought about opening the coat closet door I'd cry. I ended up selling them at a resale shop (mainly because I'd lost a ton of weight and they'd be too big for me if/when I did actually get preggers) and because we were moving and needed extra cash.

I figured I'd get new ones when I actually needed them the next go-round.

I don't REALLY believe in "Luck" either.....just wondered what others thought about the whole thing. It was the best way of putting it though....but I just didn't want to buy stuff and then either 1) never get pregnant (aka find out we have unexplained infertility) or 2) get a BFP but end up having another miscarriage, thus having my heart broken again and the maternity clothes looming in my closet would be just aweful....again.

So.......after giving it some consideration....and reading your wonderful replies on my poll/question, I think I will wait until I'm pregnant and reach the 4th month (or for some earlier) when I actually NEED the maternity clothes!

Besides....it will totally give me something to look forward to! Who doesn't love SHOPPING!

Thanks ladies! I appreciate the comments and suggestions!

DH and I TTC'd for over 2 years, and I was not buying anything, so that I didn't make myself feel terrible if we never had a BFP. But eventually I broke down and bought some baby onesies, we got a BFP the next month. We lost that one, but got another right away, so it brought good luck to me. Not that it's anything beyond a superstition, or maybe it was an admission that I was ready, so my body complied...
Good luck!

i think you should really think about what it means to YOU. my whole family would think it's a bad luck. I mean, honestly, in my family they buy only bare necessities before babies come, you know, "just in case" smth bad happens at some point...BUT...
after i had a miscarriage, it somehow hit me, that i have to sort of "get in the mood", or 'create my own future'.
i went out and bought pregnancy books.
i subscribed to 'mothering'
i bought baby shoes, and told my husband that one day our baby will take his first steps in them (actually, no idea what happened to those)...
i didnt go all crazy, but i did those few things, i kept imagening myself with a big round belly...
i dont know if that was what worked, but a few months later i got pregnant, and my son is 14 months now.
now, my sister would be terrified if someone told her to get a pregnancy book before she is pregnant, she'd think it's the worst luck and would be waiting for something bad to happen...

It sounds like you've already made up your mind... but I thought I'd add this anyway...

I think the only thing that matters is what it might mean to you to have maternity clothes in the house. I'm not a superstitious person, and bought maternity clothes while I was first TTCing, and then had a m/c at 6 weeks or so. Having the clothes in the house didn't add anything to the horrible experience (I had many other things on my mind) -- and they can be in the house and yet not be staring you down every morning from your closet -- but even if/when I saw them they're just clothes and a sign of my getting prepared for this big change that was coming (just a bit later than I had hoped). I only bought things that would be good at any season -- and were ridiculously on sale. I would hold off buying anything full price -- as it will all be there later. I wore these clothes when pg with my son (now almost 3) and was pleased at the great buys I was able to get and didn't have any negative associations with them at all.

Just my 2 cents.

Well I said that I wasn't going to buy maternity clothes and I still haven't, but I keep seeing things I want and am scared that if I don't snatch them up they'll be gone by the time I actually decide to go get them. Stores swap out their selection now and then (and different seasons) and these are perfectly "me" and I keep debating whether or not to buy them online or not. They are Motherhood Maternity and most are on sale pretty good prices too!

The catch is that some places won't let you return clearance merchandise for a refund, they only give you store credit.

Hmm....what to do....what to do????

I'll prob just end up waiting and I'm sure I will find SOMETHING that fits that looks alright once I do get preggers and actually NEED the maternity clothes.

I'm a bit superstitious about that kind of thing, so in my opinion you should buy things that you couldn't possibly wear while pregnant, and then you surely will get knocked up. Good luck with your IUI!

Actually I did buy some really cute and sexy maternity clothes after all. They do have some really nice stuff out there if you search around for clothes that are your personal style, then you can just keep wearing the same style you normally wear! Alot of maternity tops just look horribly BORING and ancient, however if you type in "Trendy Maternity Clothes" or "Sexy Maternity Clothes" in you'll find alot of good sites that do actually have decent stuff! You can even find sexy lingerie for pregnancy, which seems almost impossible, considering that you're huge, and finding properly fitting intimates seems almost impossible, but I found a couple of things.

And....btw....to end this topic starter.....I do believe that it was "Good Luck" for me to start considering/buying it because a couple days ago I found out I'm FINALLY pregnant again! Horray!!!
