Vegetarian diet vs local omnivore diet? - Page 2

triscuit....do you garden?

A satisfying way to eat local is to grow it yourself!

I live nearish you, and know that we can grow potatoes, carrots, cabbage etc and they strore reasonably well throughout the year. Apples also store well - although it is often easy to buy local ones. We harvest berries and toamtoes in summer months and freeze them for our winter. Lettuce, brocoli, peas are cool weather plants and come up early and can be replanted for fall. Really this are is great for growing things!

TBH our winter diets are potato and carrot heavy (I refuse to buy stuff that has travelled 1000's of km) - but that is OK. It worked for our ancestors and it makes those first shoots of Spring really special.

Love this thread and the great thoughts!

We are dairy and egg free due to allergies. I don't want to eat alot of meat, but I feel that the amount I eat is seasonal. Like in the winter, I just want a big chicken stew and meat loaf and potatoes. But in the summer, I want a nice salad and a handful of nuts and fresh fruit. You have to go with how your body feels. After watching food Inc, I am more than ever not going to buy any animal products that aren't local.

If you look really hard, you may be able to find more than you know locally. I thought I was in the middle of nowhere, but I found farms around with organic beans, apples, berries, sunflower oil, grains. I found most sources by asking the HFS's where they get their local produce, and asking the locals and those running the farmers markets. I found someone selling free range chickens for $7 a bird on craigslist. I buy one 1-2 times a month and use every bit, and make bone broths after that. We are eating less meat, but it feels right to us.
