will the barrage of colds/flus ever end?? our 1st kid in preschool ...

We have two kids 2Y and 4.5Y

The oldest started preschool mornings this fall. We have had some sort of cold about every 3 weeks since early November. My friends who have had kids in daycare say that this means we'll have fewer illnesses later on, but it's getting ridiculous. My kids were rarely sick at all before my oldest started preschool. We got 1 or 2 colds/flu a year. Now it seems like were always sick or getting over something.

How do bigger families deal with this? Are they tricks to keep kids from getting every sniffle that comes through town?

If you aren't already doing it, I would suggest daily doses of probiotics, a good multi-vitamin and extra vitamin D. I was never a big believer in supplements but once I got my four on that regimen, they went all winter with nothing more than a snuffle! Of course the 11 yr old and the 9 yr old got strep last week but I count us lucky to get out of a winter w/out at least one round of bronchitis and pnuemonia! I give the Jarrow Yum-Yum Dophilis, the Whole Foods chewy vitamins and the Rainbow Lite chewy Vitamin D 1000 IU. If someone starts acting a little snuffly, then they get 2 vitamin Ds.

i dont know how to avoid it but i have one child.

from 2 to 4 the whole winter was one big runny nose.

from 5 onwards to now at almost 8 not ONE more cold. no runny noses, one short bout with cough but that was it. no flu nothing.

Part of its the age, part of it is the exposure to new germs.

My kids are nearly 6 and 9. They are sick much much less often than when they were preschoolers. Ds (9) hasn't missed a day of school for illness this year. And I did notice that dd was sick less as a 3-4 year old than ds was as she'd been exposed to those germs. She's only missed one day of Kindergarten this year. Other kids who weren't in daycare/exposed to other germs have missed more.
