diaper/nap timing issues (8 week old)

Thread Starter
My DD is 8 weeks old. (She's my first/only.) I'm using prefolds and thirsties/bummis covers. She usually (but not always) naps for an extended period at some point each day. Some days she will nap longer in the mornings, some days in the afternoon, but I never know which diaper change is going to precede the long nap. I've tried changing her while she's sleeping, and wow, was that a mistake! She wakes up screaming like she's being tortured, and I feel awful. The problem is that her diapers are absolutely soaked if I leave it during a 2-3 hour nap. Do I need to be using a doubler of some kind? If so, what are my options in cotton? (Are there any?) I tried using two prefolds (an orange edge GMD in a yellow edge) but that was way to thick to close. Plus, it seems like it would just invite moisture problems.

TIA for any advice.. gotta run, she's waking!

ETA: I just looked at doublers at nicki's diapers.. I see some options in cotton, around $3 each. I was hoping for a cheaper solution, since
I'll need quite a few, not knowing when she'll nap for long periods, and doing the laundry every 2-3 days.

You can honestly use anything as a doubler... a wash cloth, cut up old t shirts, cut up receiving blankets... pretty much anything absorbent!!!

Don't know if you are crafty, but I am using some cotton doublers that a friend gave me. They have been passed along a few families but look homemade. Some sturdy cotton layered and serged together into an oval shaped pad. Some were made with a piece of thin fleece on top for moisture wicking, others just plain cotton. They are thin so I can double or triple them in a prefold depending on my needs. I use pockets at night, but for naps and trips out I use these for a bit of extra absorbency in a yellow edged GMD prefold and a homemade serged fleece liner to keep her dry.

I'd get a couple of 4x6x4 regular sized prefolds to use (or maybe GMD's medium size?), rather than doublers. They cost less than the doublers and are more versatile, Folding them down is less bulky than doubled diapers, too.

FYI - if you make your own fleece stay dry liner, you do not need to serge them, they don't fray.

We use layers of flannel as a doubler if needed. I've used wash cloths too.
