Maybe just a coincidental fluke, but...

So I was changing DS's (6.5 months) diaper this afternoon, and he started peeing right as I was taking it off. I noticed and made the cue sound and then proceeded w/ the diaper change when he was done. Then maybe a minute or so later, DS looks at me and smiles and goes, "Sssss, sssss." At least, that's what it sounded like to me, lol. He can barely babble at all, only doing the B sound, and even that only occasionally. So he may just be imitating me in another sound, w/o knowing the connection between that sound and eliminating. Or maybe he's learning what that sound means and trying to let me know that he knows what's going on, in language I can understand. I don't know. But it was cool, lol.

Ok so right after his nap today, I was nursing him, and he only nursed for like a minute before popping off and smiling at me. Then while he was smiling, he sort of made the "ssss" sound again, but could have just been a squeezed out laughy/breath sort of thing. Because I took him to the potty and he sat there and spit up instead of peeing, lol. And today was the only other time I noticed him even trying to make that sound at all, so for now, I'm saying that it was just a fluke. I did try to listen to him, though... I really did. I just don't think he is saying what I thought he was. Oh well. We're still early in this game so some more concrete communication will come later, I'm sure.

Sounds like he may have just been wanting to imitate you and make the sound you were making at that time. That's good though! If you keep doing it, he will figure out the meaning. People have such varied experiences with their kids signaling. A lot of kids can sign or signal right away. A lot of others never give a signal (at least that the parents can see). If you can't figure out any signals, you can just take him at likely times like after nap, and whenever you get a "hunch" he needs to go.

I still remember the first time my son said our cue word, and he was about 18 months I think, it was when he had started to say a bunch of words, and when he said it the first he thought it was hysterical. He was laughing and laughing! Maybe he was just laughing at me because I was so excited, LOL.

Now he's almost three and its "I'm going potty and I don't need any help." Now that he is able to reach the light switch!

Hm, he did it again today! He smiles at me, but instead of cooing through his smile and spouting out an untypeable amalgam of consonants, he was on the bed this morning and clearly said just "sssss." So, even though he'd pottied only about 6-7 minutes prior, I set him on the potty again, and he went!

That's so cool!!!! My dd very clearly said "th" for pee when she was just shy of 9 months old. There's a picture in the Ingrid Bauer book of a baby signing "potty" at the age of like 4 months. (Guess if I was expecting my baby to do that! Oh well, she didn't!)
