when does "raw" mean RAW?!

Grrrr. So I just recently found out that my almonds from Costco aren't really raw. Had been soaking and dehydrating to make crispy nuts but I guess they really weren't. apparently it's really hard to find a source for truly raw almonds.

So I was flipping through NT and looking at the sprouting section - p.129 or so? Sunflower seeds - that'd be cool. I was at Trader Joe's, and they had them! I mustered up all my courage - it always seems to take that for me w/ a new process - rinsed them, soaked them, drained away the floating hulls (translucent skins) that seperated, and now it's been 18 hrs and no sprouts. I was thinking I saw "tails," but then when I compare to what's left in the bag, it's just the exact same. I am nearly certain these must not really be raw, either, like my almonds.

We're actually growing sunflowers, so I guess I'll have a true source here in my backyard but... so frustrating.

I know there was some law or something passed not long ago that almonds have to be pasteurized due to salmonella or something... I have a feeling most of the "raw" nuts/seeds we get at the store aren't truly raw.

Does it still help to soak them anyway, though? I am new to TF, and I guess I was assuming it still helped. Maybe not, though. That's really discouraging to spend all that time on something that isn't turning out how you wanted it.
