Starting to think about names....

Well, we have had our boys name picked out for many many years to choose from. But for girls we are back to square one with this new babe to in autumn! I'd love to use a nature themed name, but not specifically a flower. I also really like celtic/irish names. Dh is partical to celtic names and "old fashioned not so comman names".

I would love to hear thoughts on our starter list for girls, and hear any suggestions of something I may not be thinkin gof yet!

Here's my list so far:

Gaelin/Gaelyn

Rowan (love this most perhaps, but have a distant friend with a daughter named it...but it was on my list first years ago for a boy and she swiped it. but now i think of it for a girl, lol)

Delilah

Amelia (love it, but maybe too popular?)

Adelaide (Addy for short)

Lane (dh loves this, I am unsure just yet)

Harper (also onour boys list as a middle name...but I go back and forth for it as a girls name)

Willow (love it, dh is unsure of it yet. perhaps too popular these days)

Scarlet (one of dh's top choices, i wonder if it is too harsh sounding sometime)

Isla

Aisling/Aislinn (love the pronounciation ais-lin, but know the proper way to say it is ash-lin.)

Clementine

Maybelle

Isobel (love it, but too comman?)

Thanks for your input

Out of those names, I think I like Amelia and Adelaide the best, but I'm partial to both A names and classic names. The only other advice/comment I have for you is that the name Harper is currently being used on the Disney show Witches of Waverly Place (which I have been subjected to way too many times....) and I don't know if that would influence your opinion or not.

We used Isobel (that spelling). The common version is Isabella which I actually don't like. Isabel(le) is a lot less popular (in the 70's I think) whereas Isobel isn't even in the top 100.

I haven't met another Isobel. One Isabella.

Clementine is on our list and Rowan is on mine. Love Rowan for a girl.

I love Willow but it's a hard name to use. I can picture a very specific looking person who can pull that off and nobody else.

Is Maybelle pronounced May-bell or Mayble? I found the first one awkward to say and not found of the second. I like Scarlet sometimes but like you said it often sounds harsh.

I don't like Lane or Harper, they are surnames and just way too masculine. The rest on the list are just meh to me.

had no idea about the tv show that uses harper. my kids don't watch. but thanks for the pointer.

maybelle like mother may belle carter ala johnny cash and june carter

i am on the fence about harper and lane being masculine too and scarlet being a bit harsh perhaps.

dh love clementine most i think. but i wonder what nicknames would evolve frm it. it's a long name.

i do like willow, and locally i don't know any, but i have several far away friends using hte name for their daughters.

rowan is my favorite these days. or gaelin sometimes....

I love the name Willow!

LOVE: Rowan (it was on our short list last time), Amelia, Adelaide, Clementine (Clem or Clemmie nicknames maybe?)

LIKE: Lane, Harper (I don't mind names that are not explicitly girls names), Scarlet, Isla (but it would be mispronounced a lot, as would Aisling), Isobel (is less common spelled that way)

MEH: Gaelin, Delilah, Maybelle, Willow

nature themed: Aspen, Ciel (means sky in french), Briar, Autumn (too obvious?)

Celtic: Keagan, Raelin (like Gaelin but better, I think) I also like Irish last names as first names, but that goes against your desire for a classic name, but worth a look, my DD's name is also a common Irish last name. My friend was going to name her baby Delaney if it was a girl (she had a boy).

Good luck!!

well dh likes both old fashioned classic names and celtic names. i tend to prefer nature names. his family is very irish and our other children have celtic names and nature names paired. perhaps something i should consider...but dh always throws in the "old fashioned" names to consider.

i love aspen as in the tree...but would not want people to think aspen like the city. i do love tree names. hence rowan and willow. we also are considering roan...similar to rowan which is a mountain near us in NC.

i'm liking celtic and irish gaelic names atm, too, so your choices are very similar to mine. (and your mention of Roan compells me to reply)

my current fav, if a girl, is Ailish Roan. (pronounced AYE-lish, but i prefer EYE-lish) i was stuck on Aislin for a time, but got discouraged w/ all the purists demanding it be pronounced ASH-ling, as opposed to ACE-lin, which i had grown accustom. (funny, too, i thought, because many times names will evolve to suit different demographics w/ nary a hitch. for example, Caitlyn, apparently, is pronounced coit-LEEN, but for some reason no one bitches up a storm over that one, lol)

I liked Ainsley, too, but am not too keen on 'y' endings so i let it go. (unless dh insists)

So Ailish Roan it is atm. feel free to steal. (i think, *gulp* )

oops, subbing.

If we were going to use Clementine, we decided on Emmy (or Emma) for a nickname.

It's not on your list but Charlotte is nice too with the nickname Charlie or Lottie.

i also have been thinking of roan for a middle name alot. ailish is beautiful too! love the combo. was your meaning after the mountain too? your thought on aisling are mine too! i love the pronounciation aze lyn too. but know many purists feel it should only be ash lyn. i am not sure how i feel about it all. it's been on our lists in the past and i still go back and forth, lol.

i love ainsley, but went to school with a boy named that....and i feel the connection is too strong to him having it. and people i went to school with would think it was weird.

another funny side note...jude and river have been on our boys names list for 8 years, lol....

Rowan

Delilah although its a few years old... may still make people wonder if she is named after the song hey there Delilah

Amelia Its getting popular, I wouldnt say it is horribly popular yet

Adelaide

Harper The only Harper I know is an extremely intelligent and sweet girl (her response to finding out DS is moving away this summer was: Oh thats too bad. Hes a good kid. ...Shes only 7.)

Clementine Makes me think of oranges. Not necessarily bad as they are super tasty but I do see a problem in high school when the boys realize that clementines are those easy to open oranges... not really something I want associated with my own daughter... being easy.

Maybelle Im sort of iffy... this one makes me think of Maybelline makeup.

Isobel Ive never heard it like this. Isabelle is common and I think it would very often be spelled the Isabelle way.

any names I didnt comment on were just meh... nothing that I personally love but also nothing I can think of any reason why it would be a hassle.
