We lost everything... update in post 15

Our family has a farm that we work together, just behind our house. We probably have about 20 acres total, and farm about 18 of them. Today we lost everything. All of it. It's all under FEET of water and in less than 24 hours time. It's completely surreal, and nothing I could have imagined in my wildest dreams.

Here are a few before and after photos.

I'm terribly sad about the garden but so grateful that our home was built on higher ground. Many of our neighbors have not been so lucky, and the rain is not supposed to stop until Monday morning.

Anyone else affected by the flooding?

I'm so sorry Our area had some very bad flooding at the beginning of April but thankfully our property is higher up...other people in my neighborhood were not so lucky and are still pumping out their basements a month later.

I'd be absolutely devastated if I lost my garden, I can't imagine what it would be like to have your whole farm under water.

Will you have the time and seeds to replant? Can you still salvage the season?

No flooding for us this year, but in '93 we lost our house to a flood. I was 12yo at the time.

I'm so sorry for your loss! I totally understand!

Thanks for all the well wishes! We had severe thunderstorms all night and spent some time huddling in the basement (which is now flooded) hiding out from the tornadoes. We were really lucky that the tornadoes passed by without touching down.

We may be able to replant if it ever stops raining and dries out, but we've had damage to all of the tractors, and lost tons of equipment. I'm also not sure what the land will look like once it starts receding. There are trees and debris everywhere. It's just so devastating.

Think dry thoughts for us, it's supposed to rain all day and all night tonight.... the very last things we need!!

Update

The waters are receding! We can finally see land again, and the sun is shining!

We feel incredibly lucky to have not lost anything more than our equipment and crops. They have declared 52 counties in TN as disaster areas, and there are over 2000 people staying in shelters in our area. Hundreds of people have lost their homes.

Our town is completely out of gas, and there are 10 counties that may have contaminated drinking water, so they have asked people to boil their water before using it. Even worse, many of the people in those counties are still trapped in their homes with no electricity, and the roads are washed out. They probably don't even know that their water is unsafe. Over 200 people were rescued from their homes just yesterday.

Please continue to think of the people in TN. It's really, really bad here.

Please keep us posted on how things are going for you. I couldn't stop thinking about all the folks in TN whose lives had been drastically changed in such a short period of time. I stop grumbling about early mornings and chores when I think that someone else no-longer having the farm/animals/job to be getting up for.
