How many hours or nightime and naptime sleep does your 6-8 m old get?

Ds sleeps 11-12 hours at night ( not straight through)
Naps are a nightmare and some days his total naptime sleep is less than 1 hour( 2-3 naps 15-30 min naps)
I either nurse him to sleep and then lay him in his crib or he falls asleep in the Moby/ Ergo and I wear him till he wakes up. Maybe once or twice a week he takes a random 2 hour nap. 95% of the time his naps are less than 30 min. How can a 6 month old sleep so little during the day? He is mobile and very small ( 15 lbs at 6 months) and I worry that he isn't getting enough "rest" time.
So what does your baby do? DD slept so much more as a baby and sleeps more than him now and she is 3 and he is 6 months!!!

My little boy is just 6 months old. He sleeps 10-12hrs at night (with many feeding breaks).

During the day he takes about 2-4 naps, 30min in the morning, 1hr around noonish or earlier and another 2hr nap in the afternoon. Sometimes another 30min nap in the afternoon.

He falls asleep in the Beco, in the car seat or when being nursed down.

My son's 7 months old. He's in bed typically for 9.5-10 hours a night... he wakes to nurse at least once every night and usually twice (sometimes 4 or 5 times, still :P) but doesn't stay up for long, just eats and goes back to sleep.

Naps have become really hit or miss for us over the past couple of months. He used to be a four naps a day kind of baby. Kinda miss that.

Now we usually get one good nap a day. And by good, I mean he sleeps at least 30 minutes. A really "big" nap for us now is an hour, an hour and a half. (We do every now and again get those surprise 2.5 hour naps... seems to be totally random, I dunno.) He often takes a couple micro naps (15-30 minutes) as well but sometimes he just decides he doesn't need them.

we're at 7 months and 11-12 hours at night (buut, she's been waking up earlier lately which is a major bummer).
two naps during the day. AM nap at 45min-1 hour. PM nap could be 45 minutes but it could be 2 hours.

i really only care so much about naps b/c supposedly they affect nightttime sleep (well, also because she's tired) but if your guy is sleeping so well at night and happy during the day i'd say you're doing something right....right?

oh and p.s.

any long naps of more than one sleep cycle or 45 minutes really just started fairly recently. the 2 hour afternoon nap really only started around 6 months or so. i think some babes really have to grow into sleep consolidation and still sometimes i have to help her through (i.e. if she wakes up groggy and crying i know she's not done and pop the nuk in her mouth to extend the nap.)

Our DD is 9.5 months. Between 6-8 months she would sleep 11-12 hours at night (waking 2-4 times to eat). Naps were 2 40 minute naps a day.
She is the same now. Every once in a while she will nap for 1.5 hrs.

We have been trying to extend her naps beyond one sleep cycle (40 minutes). To do so,we go in the room around 30-35 minutes and then shush her and pat her back or rock her back to sleep when she stirs. If we can get her back to sleep she will sleep for another 40 minutes or so.

My guy is 7 mos. He goes to bed about 9:30, and wakes anywhere from 6-8, but never later than 8:15, and occasionally well before 6.

Some days I get 2 or 3 naps out of him. Some days I get none. Today he took a 30 minute nap in the car, and then slept maybe 90 minutes in the early evening... but I had to swaddle him for that - he was so cranky not sleeping wasn't an option. A good day would involve 2 30-minute naps and a 2-3 hour nap. That's the recipe for a happy baby, but he's not really interested very often lately.

We have the same baby!

DD is almost 6 months old. She sleeps about 10 hours at night, usually waking up twice to eat during that time.
1st nap is at 11 and usually goes till 1:30-2, if I do not disturb her and take her out or keep her awake to do other stuff.
2nd nap is around 4 or 5 and is about 1.5 hours.
Then to bed at about 9 or 9:30.
If I take her out somewhere when she wants to be asleep, she is tired and rubbing her eyes and will try to sleep wherever we are but she doesn't really get cranky unless she can't sleep at all.

at 6 mo dd2 slept 11-12 hrs at night (nursing most of the night)and napped (while latched on)3-4 times also. All babies are different to be sure. I would like to ask all the mothers of nonsleeping babies, are you ingesting caffeine, high fructose corn syrup or food colorings? These all could show in the breastfed baby as sleeplessness. Do they stay latched on and nursing for an hour or more at least once a day?

Well, since Dylan and Israel are birthday buddies, I just had to answer. As you know, he's had a hard time since March. But, he goes to sleep around 7pm (stays on me until 10pm). He gets up between 6-7am. He nurses 2 times at night, but tosses and turns every hour after 2am.

For naps, he takes 3. They range from 30 mins - 1 hr. But, those are all on my lap or stroller. If I put him in his co sleeper or bed we are lucky to get 20 minutes!

I wish I could get him to sleep more. The naps are definitely longer than they used to be...now if only they weren't on me!!

My six months old gets roughly 13 hours in a 24 hour period I'd say. His nights are about ten hours and he nurses throughout (we bed share), then he has established a recent pattern of three naps a day, about an hour each.
Nap durations vary though, it depends upon the circumstances. The one thing I can count on though is that he needs to nap every two to three hours after he wakes in the morning. He seems to have settled into this pattern somewhat recently.

No caffeine , HFCS, or food colorings on a daily basis. Doesn't stay latched on very long either. Before bed is his longest nursing at maybe 45 -55 min.

Just curious what this signifies.

My DD is 8mo and sleeps about 13 hours total. She sleeps about 10-11 hours at night and then takes two 1.5h naps during the day. She was taking 3-4 naps a day when she was 6mo though.

Nursing for an hour or more in the infancy stage would be a good indicator that the baby is getting enough hindmilk as well as enough milk in general. Too often new mothers are told to let a baby nurse for 10-20 minutes per side when sometimes that just isn't the best thing. I always suggest remaining braless and allow the baby to stay latched on as long as desired without breaking them off (until they are older at least). Long sessions allow the breasts to have more than one letdown which establishes supply. A baby not getting enough could also exhibit as wakefulness, this is why I put that line in. Thank you for the opportunity to explain what I meant better, I often do not use enough words to convey what I mean.

This is us EXACTLY! He still wakes anywhere from 2-5 times a night to nurse, but eats and falls back to sleep immediately (we co-sleep so this is easy). I have found with the naps, that if we are out-and-about he is too distracted to sleep and can easily get by with only two 20-30min naps, which just seems like way too little sleep for a babe. So I have to make sure to be at home at the right times for him to get real naps in. I try to make sure to do this 5-6 days out of a week. I can't always be at home for his naps, but I do think they are important and I generally can plan my schedule (such as it is as a SAHM) around his. He remains cheerful though even when he doesn't get his regular length naps. Which is nice, but weird too.

I am in the same situation with DS, 6 months! Naps are a constant struggle for me (and it seems for him). Some days he'll nap for two hours and some days he literally gets zero minutes of nap, or maybe 5 minutes when he falls asleep nursing (but then wakes up when I move or breathe). I also cannot understand how he is functioning without naps.

If he were happy with so little sleep, I'd be fine with it, but it kills me when he's clearly tired but I just can't get him to nap. My new thing is I'm trying to respond super-quick to ANY signs of tiredness during the day -- yawning, eye-rubbing, snuzzling into my collarbone -- and try to get him to sleep (which involves bouncing him in my arms until he falls asleep and then gently transferring him to crib). He is sleeping now (10 am), and I'm crossing my fingers it will be a good nap. He won't sleep in the Moby.

Is a 6-8 month old still considered infancy, though? My baby used to be all about the 40-60 minute nursing sessions, but in the past few weeks he's become a lot quicker nurser, like 8-15 minutes. I chalked that up to him just getting older and more efficient. His napping patterns (or lack thereof) have not changed with the shorter nursing sessions.

Regarding caffeine, fwiw I gave up my daily Diet Coke (my only caffeine source, and one of my few remaining vices!) for a couple weeks to see if it affected his sleep. It didn't, and the lack of that little bit of caffeine made me feel like a zombie, so I'm back on the Diet Cokes.

DS is 7 mos. He generally co-sleeps for about 11 hours overnight waking to nurse between 2-5 times. Naps shift a lot, sometimes we'll get 3 naps per day maybe 30 minutes or so, sometimes an hour and rarely longer but on occasion he will sleep more than that. Other days he may only take 1 20 minute nap. I never know what he'll do. Thankfully though nights are pretty consistent.

at 8 months:

Night time sleep is 11 h. For the first few hours she will nurse hourly. Then generally just once or twice after I go to bed too.

1 or 2 naps, and we are lucky if they total an hour. RARELY she will have a long nap, where we keep checking to make sure she is breathing LOL
