Thrifty Ideas for Nursery Wall Art

I was wondering if you ladies had any creative ideas for something cheap I could use/make as wall art for my twins' nurseries.

If it helps, DD's room is princess/castle (not Disney) theme and DS's room is transportation (cars, trucks, boats, trains, planes).

I did dots for my twins. I found some pink, brown, and tan dotted bedding, and some green, brown and tan dotted bedding (boy/girl twins) I found some wall stickies that matched the dots and had jungle animals in the right colors too. A green cover for the diaper pad and it is a very cute room!

You can frame sheets of scrapbook paper or greeting cards. Or upholster squares or circles of plywood with some batting and fabric of your choice then hang them up.

You can also frame the illustrations from a favorite book perhaps with a similar theme. I love Eric Carle! I also love framing and matting the children's own art.

i just saw a cute idea someone did on some blog. They put up baby quilts like maybe 20 of them on a wall. You could probably collect some cheap ones at thrift shops. it looked really cute, all different designs a few inches apart you can get themed ones for your sons room.

The Dollar Tree has wall decals... I bought a pack of the jungle animals for my son's playroom, they are pretty cute... I would have loved to make/paint something but just didn't have the time! They also have flowers, luau, cars, etc. I don't remember all the themes...

I bought wooden stars and painted them yellow and attached them to the blue wall with double sided tape in kind of a star burst pattern. Cost about $5 to decorate an entire wall.

My MO in decorating my children's rooms is to pick a flexible paint color and an attractive patchwork quilt that matches with neutral curtains. Once I do that I can swap out a few accessories here and there and change the entire theme of the room for not much money.

I framed pages from vintage Little Golden books in the transportation theme. They turned out really cute. I bought mismatched frames at Goodwill, then spray painted them black so they'd all match. Cut out the pictures I liked, framed them, and hung them. Very easy, and they always get compliments. And my little boys love them!

I have a baby nursery and a big boys' room, so for my nursery, I have framed announcements from their births, a tapestry/piece of fabric hanging, and some more framed vintage childrens' poems.

This might not work for the OP's rooms/themes, but I thought I'd throw it out here in case it might help someone else. . .

My mom used to hang vintage baby clothes on vintage hangers to decorate the wall of my nursery/bedroom. It was really cute! The baby clothes were mostly from our family, a few were found at antique/thrift stores, and the hangers were from a flea market.

The princess/castle theme can also be tied to dress up. I realize that the babies won't be doing that yet, but getting cheap dress up stuff like beaded necklaces or silk scarves and letting them drape out of a basket can be cute. A door mirror with wall stickies around it too. And, as she grows, the decorations will be reused at toys!

Last year's calendars cut out, matted, and framed with dollar store frames make great pictures. I got a free Sierra Club-type calendar the year my BFF was due, full of pics of baby animals. Cut them out, matted them (I have my own matte cutter), and painted cheap wooden frames from the dollar store. So adorable and cost me practically nothing!

You can find wall stickers or wallpaper cut-outs for pretty cheap. I found a set of fairy wallpaper cut-outs at Lowes for $30, and it looked SO cute on the wall of my DDs' room when they were smaller.

like another pp, i've bought wooden figurines (animal theme for my ds) from michaels (a craft store here in canada, not sure if you have it in the US), painted them different colours (dark for a light wall) and stuck them on. they look like 3-D art..they really pop out from the wall. and they go for some 40c a piece. i only did the one wall this way and little matching accents everywhere else (like a bucket full of stuffed animals by the crib) and the room looks cute! for my first ds, because i had loads of time () i painted a collage of pictures on one wall. you can see it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9487714@N07/2720152792/

In bean's nursery we did hoop art with left over fabrics..
The other wall I splurged on a set of butterflies for 20 at Target. Her mobile I made from items off our diaper cake.

Total cost was under 10 bucks.
Oh and the walls aren't that orange color...they're a dark burgundy with glitter in the paint...then under the chair rail they are still dark burgundy with sponged on gold glitter paint....the old homeowners painted it that way and we just left it....plus makes for a dark cozy room that a baby can actually fall asleep in.
