Happy Birthday May '09 Babies! - Page 3

I think she's getting better!!! The fever has broken and she's finally interested in food and toys again. Thanks for the warm thoughts, everybody. This was the scariest sick spell we've encountered yet.

We took her to the ped yesterday when she started vomiting () and he diagnosed an ear infection. (Ear infection --> vertigo --> vomiting. Who knew? Not me.) She doesn't pull her ears or chew her fingers or do any of the usual things kids do with ear infections, so it's hard for us to know when she has one.

He prescribed antibiotics immediately, so I started asking all sorts of questions about the effectiveness of antibiotics and the side effects and whether it's likely to be viral vs. bacterial and the benefits or harm of waiting a couple of days before giving them to her. He looked shell-shocked for a minute, then reluctantly admitted that yes, we could certainly wait a couple of days to see if her immune system could battle the infection on its own. "It's a newer way of doing things," he said. (I liked him, so I restrained myself from rolling my eyes and saying, "actually, it's an older way of doing things...")

Anyway, so far we haven't given her the abx (though DH insisted we fill the scrip just in case she gets worse in the middle of the night) and she's starting to perk up a lot and the fever has gone away -- so I think her little immune system was up to the challenge after all. Her poor mother, on the other hand, is totally fried.

That is hysterical! Olive doesn't have any words yet. I'm still a little scared about the moment she starts to talk!

Oh, and Kelly, a little boy! That's marvelous!! Congratulations. DH is starting to talk about trying for another little one -- I think he's nearly got me convinced. But AF hasn't come back yet (talk about a marvelous little side effect of extended breastfeeding!), so maybe we'll just stop trying not to get pregnant and see what happens...

And... exciting news of today... I got my new issue of Mothering a few days ago and the article on EC convinced me to start trying to use the potty with Olive. So today, when she woke up from her nap, I put her on the potty and -- whaddaya know? She peed! She was so proud of herself!!! There's one less diaper to wash today!!!

Kelly - Congratulations! I love the ultrasound picture.

Comtessa & others still nursing, my AF returned while we were 100% breastfeeding when she was 5 months old. Breastfeeding is no guarantee no AF. Just so you know, esp if another baby isn't in the plans.

EC - we have Bjorn potty and DD uses it during the day. We have no idea when she is about to go. But we do put her on it when doing a diaper change. Sometimes she goes, sometimes she doesn't. It's about 50/50. And yes, I'm glad those are less diapers to wash. Plus she won't go through the freak out period of switching to a potty chair later.

Party plans are still in the works. I'm making potato salad for 25. I hope. I bought 10 lbs potatoes, boiled 12 eggs, need a quart of mayo... here's hoping it's enough.

Congratulations Kelly!

Sophia woke up tonight throwing up, I had to change the sheets, give her a quick bath. She threw up around 3 times. She had some salmon tonight, but she's had it many times before without any reactions. Other than that she seems fine and is back to sleep. Poor baby though, it made me sad

Her bday is on Sat. She's been more talky too, but not a lot that I have figured out what it is. She says daddy, gato, mama, nanananana(that's her no, no, no, no), when she's mad she says something like abububu. Im bad at deciphring what she's saying, she points at things when you ask her what they are, she has also been offering me her food for like a week or two now and loves when I actually take a bite. Today we were sitting outside and she climbed the chair and sat like a big girl, she heard some kids playing and she would scream "udu!", she thought it was Jack. I taught her yesterday how to show with her finger that she's one. I say "uno" and she sticks her finger out, so cute.

I should go to sleep, hope all the sick babies get better. Congrats on the boy Kelly again

Yep, we were still nursing on demand when my period came back at 6 months. I've heard of nursing women (doing all the "right" things for holding back the period-- no artificial nipples, co-sleeping, etc) getting it back at like 6 weeks! That would suck.

Hope Sophia feels better, Auraji!

Yup, that was me, both times, it does suck! You'd think a baby nursing every 45 min day and night would do the trick (which my daughter did for over a year) but NO, my body figured it was time.

It's Luke's birthday! All day, I've been thinking "At this time, last year, I was _____." And of course, he woke up with a fever this morning. I think he has an ear infection because he's been fussing with his ear a little bit and he's having such a hard time napping today. And I can't even give him tylenol for it because of the stupid recall. Arg!!! I was going to put some breastmilk in his ear, until DH asked what would happen if it molded in there...and now, I'm totally freaked out about that possibility.

Kelly-congrats on the boy! And I love that "conversation" you and Emma have...so far, Luke can imitate most words and noises, but only says a handful of words consistently...dada, uh-oh, whoa, arf, meow. He does spend a lot of time "conversing" with the pets, come to think of it.

gotta go--he's crying in his sleep again.

Hi All -
Olivia had her 1 year appt today. We're very happy that her lead test was < 3 and her hemoglobin was 11.3. I was getting concerned about the lead because we have an older house and before I understood the lead paint issue in the house I had been doing renovations so I am greatly relieved that she doesn't have to deal with lead. ETA - the blood test was easy - Olivia didn't cry when her finger was pricked but did start to cry as the nurse needed to hold her finger until enough blood drops were squeezed out. She was more mad than felt any pain.

20# 29 1/2"

Still no teeth but the bottom two are just about to break through.

With fevers, I thought that as long as it was under 103 that the fever is helping fight off the illness. I hope all the sick babies get well soon.

I'll give Tylenol if it's over 101, usually (don't know if that's "right" but that's what we do). Or if it's at night and she's obviously miserable and needs sleep. If it's under 101 during the day and she seems okay, I'll just let it do its thing.

Kelly, your cat looks just like ours! DD1 made sure that I new that!

Lily pretty much just says Uh Oh! She can say something that sounds like "kitty", but it's not reliable. Our GP told us that second babies sometimes talk a lot later so not to be worried. She has no problems making herself understood though. She's been pointing and nodding/shaking her head for a while now.

I haven't been here in a few days, we've been busy! It's DH's work night, so I will try to get back on after Olivia goes to sleep and post some more!

She is asleep! Relaxing mommy time, love it.

About words, Olivia doesn't say a ton yet. She says mama, dada, baba (baby?), uh oh, and ba (referring to the dog, usually, I think she picked this up from DH saying "bad"... nice ) The past two or three days she has started saying things that sound like words and are consistent, but I have no idea what they are? I remember reading or hearing something about early walker/late talker and vice versa, so I haven't been very concerned. I think it has to do with using a similar part of the brain for both talking and walking, so developmentally babies tend to do one or the other. And as far as walking goes - there is no crawling any more, Olivia can run now, it's crazy! She is so fast!

Instead of saying "whazzat" she now points to EVERYTHING and wants you to tell her what it is! It's hilarious, she has a book with all these different pictures of objects so she's pointing and me and dh are like "flower. flower. flower. baby. flower. cat. cat. cat. cat. cat. cat. cup. flower. cat." (the cat seems to be her favorite)

She's also started giving hugs to everything! I can say "Can mama have a hug?" and she lays her head on my chest and puts her arms around me! GAH it's so cute! She also LOVES hugging the cats, which is hilarious and cute!

Sorry to hear about babes with fevers, Olivia had one earlier this week too. She still has a very runny nose and a bit of a cough going on. I gave her tylenol the first night she had a fever over 101, and the next day the announcement for the recall came out She definitely got some of the recalled stuff, for some reason I had the name brand despite generally buying generics.

More babies... I haven't felt the urge yet. I'm unsure but assume I've had AF (I have an IUD so it's hard to tell). I'm not sure I'll get the fever for another baby, but I'm keeping my options and mind open.

Today was Jacob's birthday party He's not one until Monday but DD turned three on Wednesday so we just combined their parties. We had a few friends and all the family in the area meet us at a local park and took a fruit tray and a veggie tray for snacks and let the kids run wild. A friend of mine bakes cakes so she baked the cutest custom cake to order for me, they looked like the classic alphabet blocks, a pair for Jacob with Js and 1s and a pair for DD with Ks and 3s. Very cute!

Hi everyone! The weeks have just been flying by and I haven't been keeping up well with these threads, but I think of all of you and wonder how your babies are. I'm glad to hear most everyone seems to be doing well and progressing.

Julian is working on walking, also just battled a highish fever last week while getting ready to pop three teeth, and has generally been getting much more communicative. On my birthday a couple of days ago we went out to lunch and he pointed at food that he wanted--that's new for us! He's a big fan of solid foods, which I still have mixed feelings about because he's of course nursing less (though he does nurse a lot at night). I'm just not ready for him to be getting so many of his calories from real food; I love the breastfeeding relationship, but he's happy and seems very healthy.

I got my PPAF back last month. We'll see what happens this month. I was hoping for a little more time, but I'm not complaining--11 months isn't bad, especially considering how long he sleeps between night feedings and how much solid food he's been eating. No plans for a second yet, though we know we will be having at least one more.

I'm a bit melancholy at how fast time is going; I, too, think about where I was last year at this time as far as the parenting journey, and I can't believe my baby is almost a year old. I'm treasuring every moment I can.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you tomorrow (whether you celebrate in your area or not), and hug those babies!

That would make sense, because for all of her verbalization Em is still showing no signs of walking, haha. She did stand up more this weekend, and completely by herself for the first time. Usually when she stands independently, it's because she's holding onto something and I give her an interesting toy and she starts examining it with both hands, not realizing that she isn't holding on any more (as soon as she realizes she panics and sits down). But on Saturday she stood up completely on her own. While I wasn't looking. I sat her down on the rug and turned around to get a toy out of the cabinet, and when I turned back around she was just standing up grinning at me. She also did a few times this weekend stand up for more than 30 seconds or so, and was conscious of the fact that she's standing. So I think her standing fear is starting to go away, probably she'll walk within the next month or so.

As cute as it is, it gets a little bit old by the end of the day, doesn't it, rotfl. I've already said "that's the lamp" about ten times this morning, and we haven't even finished breakfast.

Yeah, Marius is running too. Oh my lord. I'm in so much trouble. Not so much on the speech front, though he signs sleep, diaper, milk, eat and more. Oh, also play and bath. He says dada but not mama (). Also says nana (for eating/nursing and sometimes specifically for bananas)- I think part of the confusion there is because DH sometimes calls food numnums and calls nursing nana because that's what Raph called it.

Raph (almost 3) has learned that Marius doesn't get in trouble for some of the things he gets in trouble for- like getting things he's not supposed to. So he's taken to giving Marius long objects and then showing him how to knock things down from shelves that are out of his reach. Marius laughs and laughs. And when Raph is found with something he's not supposed to have, he says "Marius did it." *sigh* So, now we give Raph trouble and tell Marius "Stop helping him get stuff he's not supposed to have."

On the flip side, Marius has learned that Raph gets in trouble for things he doesn't get in trouble for (although that's swiftly changing). So, he'll do things and then stand there with a smile on his face while Raph gets in trouble. Darn boys.
