I've been taking 6000 IU's of vitamin D each day since last fall and it's made a hugely positive impact on my immune system. I just found out I'm around 6 weeks pregnant and I'm wondering if this amount of vitamin D is considered safe for pregant women? I can't see a practitioner for several weeks yet so I thought I'd check here and see what the general mama wisdom is on this subject.

I *just* read an article on CNN about a new study on Vitamin D in pregnant women. It only studied 12wks+, but they found no ill-effect in taking 4000 IUs of Vit D - which is 10x the current recommended amount! They found it decreased the rates of preterm labor, infections, etc.
Now, I have no idea what 6000 IU would do, and if it would have an effect on early pregnancy. But here's the article:

Dr. Mercola recommends 5,000 IU per day for pregnant women. See: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/ar...the-Truth.aspx. I think that 6,000 IU is just fine!

I was taking 4000 IU just on suspicion of having low levels. Then I got my Vit D levels tested when I started seeing a new doctor and they came back borderline low so she suggested I go up to 5000 IU. I had just found out I was pregnant at that point, so called back to check if it was still okay, and she said absolutely, in fact it's very important for both mother and baby!
