Is this amount of Vit D still ok?

I've been taking 6000 IU's of vitamin D each day since last fall and it's made a hugely positive impact on my immune system. I just found out I'm around 6 weeks pregnant and I'm wondering if this amount of vitamin D is considered safe for pregant women? I can't see a practitioner for several weeks yet so I thought I'd check here and see what the general mama wisdom is on this subject.

I *just* read an article on CNN about a new study on Vitamin D in pregnant women. It only studied 12wks+, but they found no ill-effect in taking 4000 IUs of Vit D - which is 10x the current recommended amount! They found it decreased the rates of preterm labor, infections, etc.

Now, I have no idea what 6000 IU would do, and if it would have an effect on early pregnancy. But here's the article:

Dr. Mercola recommends 5,000 IU per day for pregnant women. See: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/ar...the-Truth.aspx. I think that 6,000 IU is just fine!

I take 6000 IU's and have told this to my midwife and to the doctor that did my blood work and neither said that was too much. If anything I worry it's not enough, especially because I don't get a lot of sun.

Yes, it's fine! My midwife was actually really surprised when I told her that I take that much. She said she'd like everyone to, since pretty much everyone else's levels are too low.

I was taking 4000 IU just on suspicion of having low levels. Then I got my Vit D levels tested when I started seeing a new doctor and they came back borderline low so she suggested I go up to 5000 IU. I had just found out I was pregnant at that point, so called back to check if it was still okay, and she said absolutely, in fact it's very important for both mother and baby!

My vitamin D level at my first blood draw during pregnancy was a measly 17. I started taking at least 4000 iu a day and my midwives are totally behind it. You guys are making me think I should be taking more, actually.
