My homebirth I spent very little time in bed but did birth in it. I was in the tub for most of my labor (it was less than 5 hrs) and got out when my midwives arrived. They checked me immediately and I was 9 cm, water broke on it's own ALL OVER THE BED - thankfully there was a waterproof sheet on- and I birthed a minute later. So about the last 5 mins was in the bed, my bathroom was small and cramped and I was getting no relief from the water at that point and was panicking to try something different, had no idea I was ready to birth!

It was nice and easy clean up, my SIL and sister stripped the bed and under the waterproof sheet was another set of sheets clean and dry and ready for me to get into. No fuss, no mess. Plus you never know if your labor will start by your water breaking in your bed in the middle of the night while in bed. I actually keep a waterproof sheet on my mattress for the first few weeks pp, or at least a folded towel under my spot because of all the leaking going on from bleeding and breastfeeding.
