Yogurt, phenols, and red ears

Would anyone have a clue about this? I try to do goat yogurt for DS because it really helps his stools. But I notice that he gets red ears and it even swells up a bit. I read that it could be from the phenols in the milk. So does the benefit of the yogurt outweigh the disadvantage? Or should I stop the yogurt?

I hope someone has an idea. Thank you!

Still hoping someone knows.... (cross fingers!)

Yogurt could have amines, so possible... I know more about red ears and salicylates, sorry! Does he get red ears from anything else? I'd try some other foods high in amines and see what happens.

ETA: Adding molybdenum, magnesium, and B6/P5P supps can help with phenol sensitivity, so you might try that as well (B6 via breastmilk if he's still nursing, mag and mo directly).

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try the supps. He only gets the red ears when I do the yogurt; I haven't noticed he gets it from anything else. (he even gets red ears through drinking breastmilk)

Is he eating any other sources of dairy, or just the yogurt? If only the yogurt, and it is causing SWELLING, I would stop it immediately!! If it was only the red ears, I wouldn't be as concerned. But swelling is serious. (If he eats other dairy and only gets this reaction from yogurt... than I have no idea.)

The goat yogurt is the only dairy source he eats. I haven't tried any other dairy for him. Should I try other dairy before I give it up? I did stop the yogurt a couple days ago, and sure enough, his stools got loose again. I started giving him the yogurt last night and this morning his stools were fine again. I did decrease the amount. Plus I gave him supplements. His ear seems okay so far. The yogurt seems to be the only thing that works for him. I am wondering if giving him less amount is okay or if it is still causing an UNSEEN reaction, such as in his gut. He did have IgE and IgG testing for milk and the results were negative, but I don't know if the testing is accurate since he was under a year old when he got the testing done.

No, if there was swelling I wouldn't try it again. I would probably do allergy testing again and get an epipen to be on the safe side.

eta: DD's first RAST (before 1yo) was negative for dairy, but every SPT since then has been positive, and she is very allergic to dairy.

Here's a queer thing that happened to me though... curious to know your thoughts. At the same time that DS took his allergy testing for IgE and IgG, I also took the same testing too for IgE and IgG. My results were also okay for everything/no allergies. However, I have previously had swelling of the lips, more than once, when I eat shellfish that is raw or has not been cooked thoroughly enough. I also react with mouth blisters/bubbles when I eat wheat like pasta/noodles. So I don't know why my results were negative.

My son gets red ears too, but it seems to me to be related to more things (I even thought gluten does it bc. he had some cookie, but who knows what was in it...) However, his IgG tests showed that he was very reactive to yogurt. He does have however very bad yeast issues and I think that is the root of our problem. I am trying to get rid of the yeast, and hopefully the issues (figured out or not) will get solved. Probiotics, enzymes, supps.

Can you give him kefir water? It seems to me that the probiotics in the yogurt help him, that's why his stools are better.

I have also been coming to the conclusion that it must be the yeast that is at the root of the problem!

I should try kefir, but I have to learn more about it. I will have to look up threads that discuss this. Thanks for the thoughts and ideas. I appreciate it.

What about Kombucha or some kind of lacto-fermented homemade pickle? My kids will eat Bubbies pickles too which have lots of probiotics.
