weight gain with twins

Thread Starter
Just wondering about weight gain with twins. I read somewhere if you gain 24 lbs by 24 weeks your chance of preterm twins go down. Im going to talk to my midwife about this, but so far at 16 weeks I've only gained 4 lbs. I look HUGE in the belly and I;ve been eating a lot but it's been generally healthy. Im doing my best to follow the Brewer diet.

Should I worry? I don't know that it would be healthy to gain 20 lbs in 8 weeks. That seems excessive to me.

FYI I am starting out with a BMI of 26.

The 24 pounds by 24 weeks is from Dr. Barbara Luke's book When you're expecting twins, triplets or Quads. It's a good read (there's a thread on it here) and I thought her nutritional advice was the best part of that book.

As for your current weight gain, I'd advise steady weight gain. I did gain nearly 24 pounds by 24 weeks, and then not a bit afterwards, as I couldn't, at least not until the last few weeks when I started retaining water.

Of course my weight was monitored regularly, but I didn't try to control it. I simply ate when I was hungry, and tried very hard to make my many meals a day healthy ones.

I delivered at 39 weeks, gained a total of 65 pounds, and had perfectly healthy babies weighing 8 pounds each.

I had been following the Brewer diet up until I found out about my twins at the 20-week u/s. My OB was concerned because up to that point I had only gained a total of 5 lbs. He didn't suggest I go crazy but he did suggest that I start eating more. I started following the suggestions in Dr. Barbara Luke's book and gained a total of 50 lbs, carried my twins to a respectable 37 w 1 d, and both were about 6 lbs.

Weight-gain is necessary and I do suggest you eat, eat, eat. Just make healthy choices. And, don't push it. There's no way I had gained that much that early on. But slow and steady worked for me.

HTH!
