question about opk's and timing of ovulation

Hi people,

so i could see all these impending signs of ovulation, but no positive opk.
Day12 of my cycle, i got a neg opk in the morning, but a positive in the afternoon. That very evening, i had very intense ovulation cramping, and big glob of cervical mucus (TCOF says that this big glob occurs right before O ) Next morning, much less cm, so i am guessing that ovulation occurred that night.

Not even a mere 12hours after the positive OPK!! I thought i had at 24-48hours to plan! I think i missed my egg again.

Is this normal, or a sign of something gone awry?

Course, cant be sure i o'd at all, until temp shift. Cant be sure i o'd that night, maybe it was the next day. I read somewhere that the cramping does not tell you when o is happening, just that it is impending.

Also, can you have such cramping and not O?

Sigh, i hope i didnt O that night, because i had my insemination the next morning, and the little eggy might not have survived the long hours.

(to be precise, neg opk was 7am that morning, positive was 3pm that afternoon, cramping occurred at 9pm, and insem at 9am the next morning)

Does anyone know more about this? Help!

opk can be positive 12 hrs, perhaps even a little less, before o. most often o happens 24-36 hours after first +opk. did you continue to take opks after that? did they stay pos? cramping can happen before, during, or after o. and of course, +opk, cm, or o pain, those all may suggest o'ing, but it's not certain. not sure about big glob timing. cm is also subjective, so it may depend on where you feel for it and how hydrated you are, and a lot of other factors. likewise with o pain. do you check cp, too? i find it very helpful. just fyi also, lh is metabolized in the morning, so it is unlikely to have your first +opk at 7 am. the recommended times to take an opk are between noon and 8 pm. i have found if i only have one day of +opks i o the day after, if i have 2 days of +, i o 36 hrs or so from the first, but i know it may be different for other women. do you have a chart? has your temp showed signs of shifting yet? how many days ago was this? you will have to just watch your temps i think to get the best idea about the timing, unless you've got a doc doing bloodwork and ultrasounds i guess. good luck, i hope you caught it!

Charting not relevant yet, as this was only yesterday.
If i have a tendency to O so early after a pos OPK, i have to be prepared for the next cycle. (unless i get a bfp:-) ) I actually wanted to get in early on the cycle and then it all happened so quickly.

i know that FOR ME. i only get a +opk on the day of o. i have a realy shor window for my LH surge, like i take 3 a day to try to get a pos when i see EWCF, lol!
i only realy have 2-3 days of fertile CM (2 days of WCM, one of WECM) and then back to nearly dry after ov. so if you chart, it may be easier to know when you o.

like this: http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/1b07bd (my chart) i didnt even get a pos opk last cycle, testing 7 am and 2 pm.

this cycle i did opk 8 am and 4 pm on fertil CM days and when i saw the temp dip, i tested 3 times that day, and didnt get a pos till 8 pm. but like you, i had a glob of EWCM that morning.

good luck learning your cycle, hope you dont need it cuz you get a BFP this cycle!

I've read TCOYF and I'm also a big Fan of Shettles' "How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby." From what both of these have said, it seems that the LH surge can be about 12 hours after a positive opk or as late as 3 DAYS after. That's why Shettles is a huge advocate of paying attention to the other signs as opposed to just using opks. The huge glob of cm is good, but testing stretchiness and clarity is more important than amount, according to Shettles. Was it stretchy? Shettles also says that it changes immediately after o in consistency, losing all of its stretchiness. So I check my cm every few hours when I'm expecting o (I know, obsessive.) I'll be using opk's this month since my LP was weird last month and I want to be sure I'm actually about to o, but cm is a better indicator overall, IMHO.

Also, Shettles says that there have been studies about the best times to use opks, and the peak hours are between 11am and 2 pm, and again between 5pm and 10pm. Shettles suggests testing twice a day in these windows using opks that don't need first morning's urine. He also advocates limiting liquids for a couple of hours before testing.

Hope this helps a bit!

Thankyou for your posts, all very helpful. Im obsessively checking cm too , so youre not alone. As far as the glob is concerned, yep, stretchy. But a couple of days later, i still had very small amounts of opaque/whitish yet a little bit strecthcy cm, so worried i didnt even O.

I must look more into Shettles. Thats interested info. Does he say anything about O pain, and how to interpret that?
