One Size Covers for Newborn?

Hey mamas! I'm totally new to the whole cloth diapering thing, but I am totally sold on CDing my babe when he/she arrives in November! (Well, at least after the first couple weeks...I intend to give DH and myself some time to settle into the whole "being parents" thing just to make the transition a bit more smooth. ) My husband, though, wants to make sure that we really do the most economical thing and buy dipes and covers we can use longer than just the first few weeks. And I tend to agree, since we are on a very tight budget already.

I am planning on using prefolds almost exclusively. So now I am researching what types of covers are going to work best for us and be most cost-effective. I know covers come in a wide variety of sizing, but I am a little intrigued by the one-size covers. Do they actually work for newborns? Or is it better to get smaller sized covers for the earlier months, then think about one-size covers for later on? I'm interested in hearing how different brands of OS covers compare, too! Thanks!

I'm pretty sold on Thirsties Duo Wraps. They come in two sizes rather than one.

To be fair, I've not tried any of the one-size covers, but if they are anything like one-size diapers, they would never fit my babes as nb's and many kids outgrow them prior to PL'ing. So some people using one-size diaper actually end up needing 3 sizes, which is not so economical.

The Duo wrap size one was slightly large on my nb (7lb3oz) when he still had his cord stump. We had to keep shoving the cover down in front so it wouldn't bother his stump. But his stump fell off at 5 days, then the covers fit wonderfully! Supposedly the size one fits to 18 lbs, but we started using them a little sooner, around 15 or 16 lbs.

And size two is supposed to go to 40 lbs (don't know as my 3 y.o. is PL'ed and still only weighs 32 lbs) so that should fit most kids while they are in diapers.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll get a lot of opinions, but we've been pretty happy with these.

Another vote for Thirsties Duo Wraps - they are awesome! Maybe get a couple newborn covers just in case? But if you are using sposies the first few days/weeks you should be fine.

We started using the one size covers (we love the blueberry coveralls) on our second son as soon as his cord stump fell off. We had no issues with fit or anything but he was also 10+ pounds at 2 weeks so I am not sure how it would work on a smaller baby.

I think you can get some fairly inexpensive covers that work very well for the tiny baby stage. Like the proraps (in the $7 range) or even proraps seconds. I think these would be better, especially for around the cord area, when your babe is tiny. Or if you'll pin or snappi you could get some even less expensive pull-on covers too.

I like the idea of the Thirsties Duo wraps too, if you don't want to go with the newborn + one size option you could go for their two sizes instead.

We have the one size Mommy's Touch covers & LOVE them. We have used them since newborn & they are still working well at 18 months. That said, ds was 8lbs 9oz & we were pretty confident we would have larger babies - I don't know how bulky it would have been on a smaller newborn. And ds grew VERY fast so he stayed small for such a short time I'm glad I didn't waste money on smaller sizes.

all except the bummi orginals (NB) and the super brites were huge even the Duo wrap was way too big at first...

With covers the Thirsties as everyone mentioned is good. But onesize doesn't always fit at first. I would suggest getting a couple of xs covers in the thirsties or tiny tush. They have great gussets. You could also go with the flip cover and lay your prefold in it. It is a onesize and my dd loves it on her baby born Dec 1.

You may have a chance of the Kissaluvs one-size cover working, b/c when you snap down the rise, it pulls down the center like an umbilical cord dip. No way the Flip will work - it is huge, esp. around the legs.

I havent yet tried the Thirsties Duo Wrap, but have 2 of them coming in the mail any day now. Our baby girl is due in 12days and my LO's tend to be on the long side as well as skinny so I did get some NB sizes as well in case they are too big.

With my last LO (now 15mos) he was 7lbs 6oz and I got a great fit with Bummis Super Brites in NB as well as Thirsties in NB. The Bummis Super Brite are really tiny and narrow and work awesome on a newborn, my DS outgrew them around 10weeks. We were able to use our Thirsties extra smalls until he was 5months old, and I love the leg gussetts to hold in EBF. The Super Brites do a really good job of keeping things contained too.

Have also used

Bummis SWW NB size: fit a newborn well, but I had a lot of leaks. They dont have gussetts and feel really "stiff". They would wick like crazy for us. Also I prefer the wipe clean interior, these tend to smell like pee very quickly. They woudnt last more than 2 diaper changes before needing another one, becuz of the smell and the soaking.
