Measuring bigger--normal?

Just a caveat: I still haven't seen a practitioner yet due to insurance issues. I feel fine, I'm growing normally, weight gain is low/normal.

So, since the beginning of this pregnancy, I've felt 'bigger' than normal. Things like my ribs expanded around 12 weeks, whereas last time it was closer to 25 weeks. Now, I can palpate my own uterus (did it the last pregnancies) so I knew I was a bit ahead from the beginning. I'm short and short waisted, so I always pop around 12 weeks. This time, it was more like 8 weeks. Right now, at 19.5 weeks, I'm measuring a full 5 finger widths above my navel. A BIG difference, no? Or is that within normal?

This baby is a lot calmer than ds, so not as many kicks, but definitely moving every day. Lots more rolling and switching from one side to another. I mostly feel the baby low down and on the sides. The only time I felt the baby at the top was when s/he was stretching and hit the top of my uterus at the same time as s/he hit my cervix. I'm also carrying way higher. My belly sticks out a lot on top, less on the bottom. With ds I carried him low and my whole belly was round, rather than this weird 'bigger top, smaller bottom' belly.

Overall, circumference wise, I'm within 'normal' range of my last pregnancies, since I'm the same size now as then. Still comfortably fitting into all my maternity gear. Except for tops. They seem to have shrunk.

Thing is, I've only had small babies. In my family, the 'heaviest' babies are 7lbs. I barely hit 6lbs 1oz. Ds was 4lbs 13oz and he was an induction baby at 37 weeks. Could this one be a giant??? Dh's mom's side has HUGE babies. Dh was born nearly 9 lbs at 37 weeks.

No one experience measuring bigger? What was the reason in your case?

My sister is a nurse and I've had her check a few times and she feels the top of the fundus at the same place I do. So she agrees I'm ahead.

Did I put this in the wrong place? Should I move it?

I'm not really worried, more curious. It might still take a few weeks to get the insurance thing straightened out and I don't want to go to Dr. Google. He scares me too much.

Thanks!

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I felt bad that no one had replied. (I do think this is the right forum.)

I measured 4 weeks "ahead" (according to my OB's judgment) for a substantial part of my first pregnancy and ended up delivering a 7.5 lb. baby at 40 weeks 2 days.

Currently I'm 17 weeks and no one has said a word about my measurements. I do know that at 13 weeks I LOOKED as pregnant as I looked at 21 weeks last time. (I compared my reflection in a mirror to a photograph.) I think that this is because the muscles tend to be weaker with each subsequent pregnancy?

I'm 5'5" with a small frame (my thumb and pinkie touch when I wrap them around my wrist) and it was totally easy to birth a 7.5 lb. baby. Pushing was fun. I did have a small tear, but I think that had more to do with position (reclining on a bed) and the speed with which she came out (20 minutes?) more than her size. I'm totally confident that I could birth a 9 or 10 lb. baby.

Thanks for replying! It was kinda weird to see I had like 50 views and no replies. I started wondering if I posted something freakish?

So you measured a whole month ahead and had a normal sized baby. Whew! Good to know! Dh started teasing me, saying that maybe this one got the huge Irish genes on his mother's side.

For my past 2 pregnancies, I measured spot on each time, so this is different. I'm only measuring about a month or so ahead as well, from what my sister the nurse told me.

I am only 5'3'' so I tend to look pregnant early too. As far as sticking out, I'm still comfortably fitting into the same size maternity wear as last time. So I don't think, circumference wise, I'm much different. Weight wise, I started heavier, but I've gained a lot less weight, so I think I'm the same as last time at this gestation. It's like I don't stick out as much, but my uterus is higher. Does that make sense?

But the top of my uterus is definitely higher. I really started noticing it when I couldn't breath as well after climbing stairs and when food had to be carefully portioned out. Something in my head went 'wait a minute, didn't this happen later on?'.

I'm not too worried, baby is moving around happily, I feel a lot better right now than with ds at this point, I've had less headaches this time around too. It's 'easier' except I feel like I'm running out of space faster! And well, being short & short waisted, there ain't much to begin with.

I just posted about having to change my due dates because I obviously missed a month.

Anyway, you could post in "I'm Pregnant" since this forum is generally about birth and right afterward, I think. It does seem strange to separate pregnancy from birth, but I guess birth stories and due date clubs and such take up a lot of space and would be difficult to keep up with if there were not two forums. Just a guess.

I'm going to go check out your post and start a thread there. I know some birth specialists visit here, so I thought they might be able to give some feedback too. Off to read & post!
