"unvaccinated babies up north dying from measles"??

I live in southern U.S. When I took my sick baby into the ER and the Dr. found out he wasn't vaccinated, she said "Good luck.You've heard of all those unvaccinated babies up north dying right? they've been getting really bad cases of the measles and dying from it."she proceeded to tell me that the MMR shot was the one she thought was most important and basically gave me the impression that if my baby dies it's going to be my fault and that Im just playing russian roulette with my child's health. I'm shy and really didn't want to discuss it any longer than I had to so I just nodded. she said she just wanted to give her spiel and then she would leave it alone because its my choice. Anyway, my question is: any idea what she was referring to by unvaccinated babies up north dying from measles? thanks.

i havent heard of anything "up north" (way to be specific! )

my own personal opinion is that she was just trying to scare you into vaccinating.

I live in Upstate NY. Havent heard a thing, and I dont vax, especially not with the MMR.

nothing in PA either and we live in a very unvaccinated area (large Amish population)

There's a measles outbreak in Ireland. That's "up North".

There WAS a measles outbreak in Michigan and Wisconsin, in 2008, maybe she's been using the same spiel since?

Chalk it up to fear mongering.

it is really great... fresh produce, raw milk and cheeses (not that we can eat them), free range eggs

Does anyone have the link to the CDC data that they are always moving and hiding on the site? The link that tells us exactly how many people died of measles?

Of course that link does not tell you vaccinated vs not... and every single outbreak of anything I've heard of involves majority (or sometimes even ALL) VACCINATED people. I would bet you my HOUSE (and it's really all I have) that if there actually were a measles outbreak going on up North (and I'm in MA, haven't heard anything), that it's not targeted toward unvaccinated kids.

Sounds like I'm not terribly far from you and nothing here, either. I wish we lived close enough to get the aforementioned raw milk and eggs and such! There's a farm that has a drop off point nearby if you order from them, but I can't figure out how to subscribe to their Yahoo group to place orders...

The last case of a measles death, at least that I can find, was in 2005. One person in the U.S. died, and I'm not even sure if that was a baby.

ANY TIME a doctor says something that makes you raise an eyebrow, don't be shy about asking for sources.

That's mumps, and no deaths. And apparently:
"The infections happened despite high coverage with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine. Among patients ages 7 to 18 -- the age group that had the most cases -- 85% of patients had received the two recommended MMR vaccine doses."

Haven't found anything on measles deaths in the northern US.

I got told that there was a polio outbreak in ontario. There was no such thing, the nurse was trying to scare me.

I also live in the PA near Lancaster where we have Amish. I have not heard one thing about any measles or dying. Also, my ped told me specifically that there has been no polio for over 40 years and the only polio realted issues came directly form the vaccine.

There was a good-sized outbreak in Brooklyn last summer, but there were no deaths.

I'm in Alberta, is that "up north?" No outbreaks here.

And aren't all 'babies' unvaccinated for measles?

With cases like this, a doctor should present each "dying baby" case:

1)Name
2)Age
3)Living conditions
4)Previous health history
5)Immune system status
6)Accompanying current diseases
7)e.t.c.
