How often do you clean your basement/storage areas?

I realized yesterday that I've never cleaned the unfinished portion of our basement. Stuff isn't dusty yet but the floor could really be swept and mopped.

How often do you do it? Do you dust everything? There are no windows in mine or vents so it doesn't get that dusty but the floor has gotten grimy from all the workers we've had in there.

We washed and painted the floors in the unfinished basement when we moved in 6 years ago. I have only ever swept or vacuumed it since then. Some of the paint is washing off but that's a whole other story...

I have to tidy up areas of the basement every month or so. Down there we have a laundry area, office area, play area and a storage area. Yesterday I helped organize the kids room and then had to organize the play room because of the overflow of toys.

I really, really have to organize the storage area. It is quite messy and I need to go through and purge especially the craft bins. It has been so nice out though that I keep thinking of things to do outside.

A couple times a year. I usually go through and reorganize everything and then clean around it. We only have a room in our basement for storage, the rest of the basement has our bedrooms, laundry room and bathroom and I clean those every week.

We do not have a basement, nor an attic. Our storage areas are: closet under the stairs and small (3x9 feet) shed-like building outside.

The closet under the stairs gets cleaned out every summer when we go camping and every winter when we decorate for the holidays. Random other times, as well.

The "shed" gets cleaned out randomly -- sometimes multiple times a season and sometimes once in a blue moon. Basically, it gets clean any time I want to get something I cannot ordinarily reach because I move everything on the floor out to the patio, get what I want, and then see all the dirt that has accumulated. So then I grab a broom and sweep it out. Inevitably, I notice a spider web somewhere higher and knock that down, which then spirals into removing everything off the shelves and pitching a few items, cleaning things off, and finally putting it all back. Sounds like a book by Laura Numeroff, eh?
