Percentile question

Hi mamas,

My 20 month old dd is measuring...

Quote:
Length = between percentile 50 and 75
Weight = between percentile 25 and 50
Head Circumference = above percentile 95
I should preface this with we all have big heads. My DS always measured 95 on all 3 from early on. But, with her, having it range from 25th to over 95th concerns me. Her head measures 19.5". Would you be concerned?

What does your ped say? Did you measure her yourself? My ped plots my children's growth on a chart so they can see if there are issues. You listed a huge range. To me, there is a big difference between 50% and 75%. I would get your DD checked out if you are concerned.

I agree. Your kid could be at 49% for weight and 50% for weight, based on what they gave you. Or, could be 75% for length and 25% for weight, which paints a vastly different picture (though, still, not at all a bad thing if that's how your kid has been all along and your dd is meeting milestones and seems healthy).

The head thing... my DS has a monster head. I do, too. I like to think we're just THAT smart . DS's percentile numbers have historically looked a lot like your DD's (a little taller at some measurements), and he's healthy as the proverbial horse. It *can* be an indicator of a problem (I think when combined with other issues), but then again some kids just have large heads in comparison to their bodies. If your ped isn't worried, I wouldn't be either. Just prepare to always be buying large-sized hats .

A large head, as a stand alone "symptom", wouldn't concern me. What's much more important is her development. Is she developing normally?

My DS is in the 5th percentile for height and weight and in the 97th percentile for his head circumfrence.

But he had a heart defect that caused him to stop gaining weight after 5 months old

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your LO... I guess what I would look at is she following her own curve? If she is, I wouldn't worry.... If not, it's worth getting things checked out.

DS's head was above the 100th percentile until he reached 9 mos old. Now it's just right at the 95-100%. He has always been in 75-90% for weight, and 50-75% for height. Big heads run in my family too.

My DD2's measurements have consistently been below the 25th for weight, between 50th and 75th for height, and around the 95th for her head. We were concerned about her head for a short time, but then with continued monitoring noticed that it stayed consistently at the 95th, roughly, and wasn't getting bigger at any kind of alarming rate, and so we knew she was fine.

I also have an enormous head. LOL So she comes by it honestly.

As for the height and weight, that looks very healthy to me. A weight that is lower in proportion to height is fine and healthy and normal.

DS is 15 months. His weight is less than 10th percentile, height around 25th percentile, and head around 75th. The doctor isn't concerned and neither am I. It just means they have big brains!
