chocolate toast?!

I need some help with this one- my 3 yo is claiming she had chocolate toast for breakfast at the daycare today, what could this mean? really chocolate or is there some other thing that might have tasted like chocolate that I am not aware exists?? She does have chocolate on her shirt and when i asked if she had chocolate she said "yes, chocolate toast". My kids just started at this daycare (in home) and the food part had me worried. I am trying really hard to keep them on a healthy and as much as I can organic diet. I havent asked right out what things they eat but I have hinted around to get an idea and for the most part it seems good, she seems to be into healthy eating, has said she makes chicken fingers from scratch, thinks school lunches are bad, etc. so, maybe she is not serving all organic food but healthy to some extent anyway. Should I be more worried though, my kids are there 5 days a week and get breakfast and lunch. That's a big part of their diet. Also when i asked that she not give my kids milk and only water while there b/c I only like them drinking one milk a day normally with dinner she said the state makes her give them 2 milks a day and she has to give it to them? I am tempted to just ask if I can pack a lunch but am afraid to hurt her feeling, i know that's lame and these r my kids i should be able to stand up for them but im a shy and not convertational person and that would be hard for me.
Sorry i got off track! thanks for letting me vent and if anyone can offer any advice id love to here it!

I've been seeing Nutella advertised as a healthy breakfast food on toast awesome stuff that, but it's a dessert. Could have been cinnamon toast, it looks like chocolate.

I think milk replacements like almond or hemp milk would be allowed, rice or soy milks are not for young kids or great nutrition though.

I'll betcha it was Nutella too. I'd say its ok to ask her for a menu so that "you can plan out the other meals based on breakfast/lunch."

I would say that if it comes out of a toaster (assumed) and has chocolate on it, it's a poptart.

I make my own version of "healthy" Nutella but mixing hazelnut-Almond butter with honey, agave nectar or maple syrup and organic cocoa powder. I add a little flax seed to hemp seed oil to make in spread better and to make it more nutritious.
My son eats it on toast so there, he has his chocolate toast!

if she is being reimbursed for meals, then yes, she may be required to offer milk.

dont be tempted to pack lunch, just do it. my ds1 went to a preschool managed by a mom i knew from LLL and natural living groups. she HATED the food they served, but the owner of the place wouldnt increase her budget to do simple things, like switch from smuckers to polaner. so from the time he was 4.5yo until now (9th) grade, i have always packed lunch for him and his now 8yo lil brother. i nver once worried about hurting anyone's feelings. theyre my kids, i feed them what i want. you dont have to be confrontational at all. i simply said "i will send food from home. they are not permitted to eat a single bite of anything that didnt come out of their own lunchbox. if the food is part of a special activity, plz LMK and i will send a healthy substitute" that was that, they posted a not in the kitchen and it was a done deal. be a mama bear if you need to be, and make no apologies!

My DD used to call pumpernickel bread chocolate bread - that doesn't explain the smear on her shirt though....I'm crossing my fingers for Nutella over a pop tart.

Well, it could have been any number of things. I can't imagine that it could possibly be chocolate bars on toast, that's just gross

But, it might have been as other's have suggested, Nutella on toast. Or, chocolate peanut better on toast. Or even perhaps cinnamon toast-depending on how much butter and cinnamon are used, it can certainly appear dark and chocolatey. Could have also been a dark bread that was used, if you put butter or something on it and end up with crumbs, that might create the smear. Could even have been "chocolate bread." I have a recipe for it using the bread machine that uses powdered coco for flavoring (not nesquik, baking coco.) Doesn't taste really sweet or chocolatey, because it's a bread and not a cake, but it's not bad. Or, like others have suggested, could be a pop tart or a toaster strudle, they are making those with all sorts of chocolate grossness. Or maybe it was a chocolate muffin that your dd was thinking is toast.

If she's is following state regulations regarding nutrition, I can't imagine that it's something totally junk food. It's probably not a nutritional power house, but I can't imagine that regulations would allow for hershy bars on toast if she's required to serve milk

my breakfast too

that's so odd! that's what i had for breakfast too!
(technically it was spent grain/whole grain bread with natural peanut butter and nuttella).. so, kind of "middlin" with the healthyness. i don't really consider nuttella to be healthy. and it does tend to stick to your shirt!

you have every right to bring food for your kids to daycare. so what if her feelings are hurt? be tactful and kind but firm, maybe blame it on "allergies" or some sort of intolerance if you need to pull the "medical" card. your provider will not ask for proof of allergies, simply stating them is plenty. be clear about what you want your kids eating, and if it isnt possible for the provider to make these accomadations, you can certainly do it yourself.

when my son was in daycare i didnt want him drinking non-organic milk (and daycares that recieve state/dfederal funding via the low-income school lunch program do have to serve milk, your provider isnt making that up) so i said they could give him an alternative milk such as oat, rice etc. water is definitly better then the grain-milks though, so hindsight id just suggest water or provide my own whole organic milk.

i have a friend whose daughter is grain-intolerant so my friend packs all her food for the day and brings it to the daycare center. sometimes they do feed her thier snacks, but generally, they seem to respect a parents choice to bring food.

check the grams of sugar and hydrogenated oils in nutella, it really is as bad as a hersheys bar, if not worse due to the trans fats. as an occaisional treat, sure. as breakfast at school? not so much.

Thanks for the replys. I think today i'll just ask if I can pack them lunch just so i am not serving them something similar to what they have for lunch at dinner time. Like monday they had mac and cheese at daycare and I had already planned on noodles with veggies for dinner. I dont like them eating similar things for lunch and dinner the same day. I'll go with that approach and see what she says.
