WIC vent - Page 2

WIC has to find some "risk" for you to technically qualify, it can be a pain, but that varies a lot from state to state. I've been on the receiving end of their bs, my DD last summer was flagged for being potentially obese by age 3 due to the fact she is in the 90th percentile. At 2.5 she was 35 lbs and 37 inches, if I remember correctly. Anyway if she grew a half inch she'd not be, BMI is a very dated measurement of health. My little sister had just graduated with a nutritional degree and most people won't fall into a healthy BMI due the fact that it does not take into it bone structure(slight, medium, large). It only takes height/weight. The funniest part with DD is she was always in the 90th as a baby it was great, as a child it was going to ruin her life. She now weighs 36 lbs a year later, now she's just fine, ugh.

I still am a fan of WIC to those who are against I can understand, for us it has been a very welcome thing for the most part. In WA we can organic veggies, bread, rice, and numerous other quality foods(we used to get OG milk too). You as the consumer can choose whether or not you want to purchase the items or not. For myself the benefits outweigh the negatives, but right now I am the poorest I've been in a very long time, so I guess I'll take it. I like the new packages, I get most of my veggies for the month this way.

No more OG milk in WA At least not where I live.
But you can get organic brown rice and barley now.

I was on WIC when I was pregnant with ds and it was insane! I just went to one appointment and that was it.

Now that I'm pregnant with this one and I heard that WIC now offers fresh fruit, veggies and whole grains, I went back and it couldn't be more different! Everywhere there were posters of mothers breastfeeding their babies, all sorts of info on the benefits of breastfeeding, etc. They offer a weekly breastfeeding support group, a FREE breast pump for working moms, plus a free lactation consultant that will come to your house after your babe is born to help you. Plus you get your own peer mentor whom you can call while pregnant and afterwards whenever you need help. I was floored. Really, just night and day from my first experience...and this was in the exact same office.

Ds is the ultimate picky eater and I got some really great advice there that has been working wonders. He actually eats meals now!

Also, in my county you're certified purely on income. They don't assess "risks" or whatever to certify you.

One thing that was pretty startling was how different ds measured at the WIC office compared to the doc's office. He was almost 3 inches shorter and 4 pounds lighter at WIC than at the doc's. I don't know which one was more accurate...and he was measured at both places within a week of each other.

We used to get it, but don't now. In the summer we get those farmer's market vouchers, so I buy lots of my fruits and dry them. I think WIC is one of those examples to use to your advantage, put up with the crap or skip it and don't get the stuff. It really isn't much simpler than that.

Where I go is nice, the women are generally very nice. The worst one is the breastfeeding/nutritionist, she is just a wanna be know it all and for me her way of communicating is more of an attack. If you don't do things her exact way she accosts you, lovely. I can't stand her, thankfully breastfeeding is not a problem for me.
