oral polio

Thread Starter
just my random musing after reading another thread...

my ds1 got one dose of oral polio in 1994. the nurse told me she could do a shot or let him drink a vial of sweet yummy liquid. i was 17 and didnt know a thing about anything, but in my mind avoiding the pain of even one prick was something good i could do for my son, so he got one dose of oral polio (next booster, they told me they had stopped using it and went 100% to the shot, never told me why, i learned it here a decade later)

no one ever asked me if my son would have contact with an immunocompromised person. my mother was in the end stages of AIDS at the time. she died when ds was 3.5 mos old, would have anyway, but it just hit me that no one ever mentioned that risk when offering the oral vax.

Sorry

They almost never do - I have never heard of a parent being told that the live vaccine that their child was just given could shed - not even Rotovirus which seems to spread all over day cares and preschools.

flu-mist

most professional don't read the warring anyway (since most DR. don't give shot, ask nurse and see their surprised face), so why tell you-someone might say NO

yeah it is funny that they didn't mention it with the oral vaccine, i remember having shingles in 96 and the dr. that saw me made sure to say that i needed to stay away from elderly, babies because of the potential to infect, but i don't remember the dr. saying anything when i had a does of oral polio in 95 either.
