odd things used as toys..

Thread Starter
hi! i'm soliciting ideas. we don't have many real manufactured toys.. i want to try to set up baskets of interesting things for dd to explore as part of babyproofing/yes environment now that she's a crawler
she loves most of all a wooden spoon (for closely supervised play).. are there things you use for toys that aren't? she's mostly exploring by "tasting" but from what i've read, the same ideas carry over so if you have children who do imagination based play with objects, i would love to hear about that too..
thanks!

My baby loves:

Washcloths. He is just fascinated by them. He carries them around in his mouth, he waves them in his hands, he puts them in and out of their basket and he puts them over his face/head. Occasionally I'll give him a little pile of about 2-3 wet washcloths (wrung out so they don't drip) and he has so much fun with them.

Old remote controls/cell phones. He loves the feel of the buttons and likes to push them.

Wooden spoons.

A bowl or a play kitchen sink full of suds. I squirt dishsoap in my sink and use the sprayer nozzle to foam up the suds really tall, then scoop them off and let him play with them. Very fun, very non-messy since there really isn't much water in them.

2-3 feet of ribbon, with edges melted so they don't fray. He loves trailing ribbon behind him as he walks.

Wooden thread spools (the craft kind you find in a craft store). He likes putting them in a basket and taking them out, and stacking them, rolling them, etc.

A deck of playing cards with a little bin. For some reason he finds these fascinating too, though they mostly just end up in a pile and he throws them.

A hat or two.

A receiving blanket to cover up with and roll around on and drag through the house...we have Aden & Anais swaddlers and they are perfect and lightweight enough for him to do lots of fun things with.

A baby toothbrush, wet with water and used while supervised.

A few plastic travel bottles glued shut, filled with random pretty beads, colored water, oil or other interesting things, to look at and shake.

Also...every now and then when I just need to do something and need him out of my hair for a bit, I give him a box of Kleenex. He is in his glory then.

One thing that all my kids have loved from the time they were crawlers is playing with the buckles in their infant seat. I would purposely bring it into the house and turn back the handle for stability, just so they could crawl up to it and mess with the buckles. They loved doing this.

ETA: Just saw the age of your kiddo. Mine is 13 months, so if you like any of these ideas, just save 'em for a later date!

My guy's just about a month older than yours, and these are some of the things he loves...

Remote control
Cordless phone
Klean Kanteen with a sport-top and a carabiner
Hair brushes
Mommy's shoes
He just recently discovered books
and just last night he discovered the joy that is empty water bottles.

He's also obsessed with daddy's glasses.

My kids always enjoyed getting into my box of tampons.

Since he started being mobile (about 6.5mos) ds has loved playing in my kitchen cupboards. I put cookie sheets, unbreakable baking dishes, and a silicone muffin pan (that was his fave for a while) in one cupboard. They make all sorts of noise when he plays with them, so he loves them. I put plastic containers in another one. He also likes to get in the drawer that I keep smaller things in like funnels and oven mitts.
Oh, and once he got a little bit stronger (he's a strong baby!) he started playing "car" with my sauce pans. And cardboard boxes in the recycling- for some reason he just can't get enough of those

I went to Ikea and went through the kitchen section and got a bunch of cool things. Measuring cups, a big silicone whisk, a sieve, a pastry brush. I originally got them as bath toys, but they get played with all over the house. The whisk is the favorite of the toys I got of that bunch. The absolute favorite toy in the house is the 99 cent Ikea toilet brush. Good thing it never made it as far as the bathroom before it was noticed and became a toy. I had to go back and get another for the bathroom. I always hide it when people come over because I don't want anyone to think my kids are dragging a used toilet brush around the house...

They like all this stuff because it makes noise or whatever, but fwiw my oldest is only just into imaginative play. It takes a while before they really understand that.

My DS is very fond of the big balloon whisk in "his" kitchen cupboard. He also loves! plastic water bottles. He likes all different sizes of tupperware which, since we switched to glass storage containers about 6 months ago, I have plenty of. He also likes the pile of coupon magazines, take-out menus, flyers etc. that we keep with the phone book. He's very into paper. Supervision is necessary because he likes to eat the paper also, but he has a fun time throwing them around, tearing them etc. He just discovered my wallet this morning and spent a good 15-20 minutes investigating it. Fortunately, it so stuffed full of junk that he couldn't actually extract anything from it. I suffer from the same problem

DS loves our phones, he will tear up anything paper in a heart beat (he is only 5 months, his b-day party should be interesting!), he was fascinated by salt shakers at a restaurant.

I've already got all my tupperware and pots in a botton cupboard for when he's bigger and wants to play while we are in the kitchen. (granted, they are there because I am short and the lower cupboards are easier for me than the uppers)

empty, clean yogurt cup
wet wash cloth
burp rag or play silk; he loves it when I cover his face
jigger (for measuring alcohol, steel cup that holds one ounce on one side and two on the other)
wooden pestle from my mortar and pestle
plastic funnel
sun glasses, but they can pinch fingers
spoon
wash cloth with crushed ice in it
whole lemon, onion, apple, squash, etc.
baby carrot; he can't get any off, but loves to gum them
a three-year-old playing nearby

uh, yeah all of the above. Including the 3yr old :-)

Especially the whole onion. it's messy and he's still confused about whether or not he likes the flavor once he gets to the actual onion. but it's always the first thing DS goes for in the kitchen.

This is what my son has in a bag of "not toy" toys:
a hair brush
some wooden spoons
a pair of old plastic glasses with the lenses removed
an old cell phone
an old remote control
an old mouse
an old keyboard
an unused paint brush
a pair of tongs
a toothbrush
a few empty containers of lotion
a hand expressing pump that I never used and he loves
some old silk scarves (he LOVES these)
a pair of headphones

and he'll also get into the potatoes and onions in our kitchen, so there's random vegetables mixed in with his toys too

For about a month now, DS' (12 mos) favorite toy has been a box. It's taped shut and has a hole cut into it and he has a great time stuffing things in and out of the hole.

He also likes books, water bottles, a couple of plastic bottles that I filled with colored sand, another plastic bottle that I filled with little rocks (makes a great shaker, but make sure you glue the tops on!), DVD covers, the dog, the cats, cups, sponges, the tins that fancy cookies come in, big pillows, etc. He really enjoys pulling things off shelves, getting into drawers, and putting things in and out of containers right now. Oh, and he's discovered how to open and close the gate on the dog's kennel...endless amusement!

Ha! Grey loves my glasses too, but oddly, he leaves his daddy's alone. My husband claims he's better at "dodging" than I am. :P

I think Grey plays with more non-toys than actual toys at this point. Some stuff he loves include:

a silicone pastry brush -- this is his absolutely favorite toy, which pains me, because it is one of my absolutely favorite kitchen tools!

spoons
toothbrushes
clothing! ANY clothing...
... but especially overalls, because he likes the buckles
... also anything with tags, he LOVES tags
other fabric... blankets, washcloths, you name it
shoes
water bottles
unspillable sippy cup (he doesn't actually drink the water, but he loves to play with the cup)
the hose for the vacuum cleaner
my backpack
the ergo
measuring cups
the laundry basket!
those cardboard things you get on takeout coffees
lemons... he will happily suck on the nipple-shaped part of a lemon for a LONG time. (Won't take a pacifier, but the kid loves lemons. Go figure!)

Probably a billion other things to boot. There's also lots of stuff he WANTS to play with that I keep out of his grubby little hands. (Tissues are an ongoing war with us. He just shoves them in his mouth and makes a huge mess with them.)

One of my favorite things about babies this age is how interested they are in, well, everything.

my ds2 loved to use a 2 sided plastic tupperware melon baller as a phone

fill an empty container with dry rice, put a tight lid on it. we use a ricotta or mozzarella cheese container, and for some reason, the lid belongs to a yogurt container. anyhow, tons and tons of shaking fun!

in the bath, he loves to play with shampoo containers. right now, all the shampoo containers, one of my plastic bangles, half of a small take-out container(never used, we have a bazillion new ones at home, he loves playing with them!)

right now, he's playing with a half-filled plastic water bottle

he loves going through my purse!

oh, and he likes the ipod too... if we want to keep him busy we will open a game for him to play

he likes pulling the books off the shelf and pulling the pages out (he would probably LOVE a phonebook, but since we don't have one, he plays with the junkmail)

i keep the plastic baggies in a low drawer, and he loves pulling them out, and getting them all over the floor

toilet paper roll. they're fun to tear, roll, and eat.

oh, and glasses, yes, but mommy needs to be able to SEE!!!

oh, he just recently discovered the plastic caps that cover the screws on the toilet, but its not like thats something i let him play with....

my rule of thumb is to think of things that he shouldn't be allowed to play with, then let him play with it if theres no safety hazard, and if there is a safety hazard, try to remove it(the safety hazard).

Some tube of some sort that's safe, don't know what it is, but he loves it
Old phones, etc.
Big Spoons, little spoons
Pots and Pans
Shoes (don't let him play with them, but when he does get into them he loves them).

OMG that's my DS's favorite thing too! If we're at someone else's house and I bring him with me when I use their bathroom, he makes a beeline for the toilet bowl looking for it.
