Please know about steroid withdrawal and adrenal suppression. Know about tapering off prednisone and be prepared to advocate like a pitbull to get good care.

An adrenal crisis can be fatal.

Despite a previous documented history of adrenal suppression after prednisone, it took me 3 weeks, 4 doctors and an ER visit (which was useless) to get proper care.

Right now, I feel I am lucky to have stayed conscious and out of the hospital.

NOTE that the 5 day burst of prednisone most often used for asthma is NOT likely to cause any problems and should be safe. However if you have heavy intermittent use without much of a break or use prednisone more than 5 days in a row, you need to be learning about adrenal suppression and talking to your doctors.

I have taken it long term for crohns. When I wean I even break my 5 mg tablets into quarters to get the lowest possible dose at the end of tapering. I go down by 5 mg per week until I get to 20 mg and then I go down by 2.5 mg per week. When I get to 5 mg I go down to 2.5 mg and then to 1 mg. I have never had any issues using this method.

Yes that is a great taper. I had a sucky taper and I don't think pulmonologists are as well versed in this as GI or RA docs. All over the internet the GI and RA patients get super low tapers--as I read on message boards, but asthma is weird.

MOST asthma gets a 5 day steroid burst for which NO taper is required. But once you end up like me, on it for more than a month, it seems they don't know how to handle the taper. And screw it up. And the adrenals are in the toilet next thing you know.
