Positive HPTs, negative blood test!? UPDATE

On Monday I took three pregnancy tests (two dollar tree, one FRER) and they were positive. On Tuesday morning, I took a digital test, and it was also positive. Later Tuesday morning, I got a blood test done. The nurse seemed quite surprised when I told her I already had four positive HPTs, and joked, "Girl, you don't need a blood test, you're pregnant!"

I just got woken up by a call from the clinic, saying that blood test was negative! I told her about my positive HPTs and all she could say was, "well, sorry, the blood test is more accurate." After hanging up I took another HPT and it was positive.

I'm very upset and confused. Help!

UPDATE: I got the results back from my second blood test and, sure enough, positive! I guess I'll never know what happened with that first test - either it was too early, or the lab made a mistake - but I'm so relieved. Thanks for the support, everyone!

That's very interesting... I don't know... I think I would wait another week or so maybe and ask for another blood test. I hope everything works out the way you want it too!

I actually had 8 positive hpt with my 3rd child. The doctor's office told me their test was negative. Well, they were wrong. My little girl will be 4 next month. Doctors do make mistakes.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

It's completely possible the lab just made a mistake. I would ask for another blood test.

Did they say what the hcg was or just say it was negative? I'd ask for another blood test, the lab might have made a mistake.

Blood tests are more accurate, but a false positive is almost unheard of!! Usually a blood test will pick up a positive before a home test. If you're still testing positive on a home test, I'm betting it was a lab error. Take another test (blood).

Now I did have this happen once to me...I had three positive home tests but it was several weeks before I got in to the dr (I was travelling for work). By the time I got the blood test, it was negative. Confused, I took another home test, and it was negative. I immediately scheduled an appt with my OB. They sent me for a quantitative hcg and it was < 2 (not pregnant). Did an ultrasound the next day, turned out I had a missed miscarriage.

BUT, in my case, the home test was also negative. In your case, the home test is still positive, so unless you're taking some meds that might effect the home test...you're pregnant! Get another blood test

if you are getting a test where anything higher than 25 or 50 is pregnant (yes, they seriously do that some places on blood tests) its TOTALLY possible to be getting positive pee tests and a supposedly-negative blood test.

I'd request a quantitative blood test rather then just a yes/no.

Thanks so much for the responses, everyone. I really appreciate it.

I called my regular OBGYN (I had the blood test done at my university clinic) and explained the situation. They had no idea why it came up negative despite 6 positive HPTs, and suggested I get another blood test done next week. I plan on requesting the quantitative one.

I’m just confused and frustrated, nobody seems to have a clue why this is happening. And I have to stress and worry for another week... it's difficult not to think of the worst case scenarios!

A lot of peesticks will detect hcg at 25 or less. There have been studies that have shown some to show pos at 12, but I don't think any claim that. I think for a positive qualitative blood test hcg has to be over 100. So, it is definitely possible if you are a really early tester. Definitely ask for a quantitative test next time.

FWIW, with DD2 I was told the blood test was negative, had an ultrasound and was told I had cysts, was scheduled for a d&c, and on the day of the surgery when they do intake bloodwork at the hospital, they told me they couldn't do the d&c because I was pregnant...turns out I had been pregnant the whole time She'll be be 2 in October, lol...so it's DEFINITELY possible to have them be wrong about blood tests. Good luck mama!

I know false positives are almost unheard of, but I also had one several months before DS was conceived. I had a positive at home (digital) then a negative pee test at the doc's later in the day and then a negative blood test. Of COURSE I did the other home test in the package the next morning and I got an "error" message.

Doc told me not to use that brand any more!

Sounds like you should just wait a bit and test again in a week or so. Good luck to you!

Took yet another HPT this morning, still positive. I'll be doing a quantitative blood test next week. Just trying to stay optimistic. The more I research, the more horror stories and bad possibilities I read, and more anxious I feel! Google is not my friend at the moment.

at this point, still getting positive pee tests only points towards that blood test being wrong as far as I see.

Here's hoping you get a positive blood test soon! Maybe in a week or two the news will be good!

Pre HPT days, my MIL knew she was pregnant with my BIL and went to the doctor's office for a blood test. It came back negative and they were adamant she was not pregnant. She told them they were wrong and that negative blood test is now 32 years old. It happens.

Just start taking care of yourself as though you are pregnant now, there's not much else you can do as they won't believe it til they see it.
