Crossfit

Any of you mamas Crossfiters? I have been doing Crossfit for about 3 months now and I am hooked. If you have not heard of Crossfit, It is highly varied Intense exercises. We do Olympic lifts, kettlebells, pullups, pushups, run, box jumps, burpees. You name it and I am sure it has been in a workout. It is used by police, military, firemen etc. to get into shape. I am loving the results and I love how it is scalable for beginners like me who when I first started could not run 1/4 mile. I am so much stronger and have so much energy. My pants are getting loose and I have not changed my diet. I am going shopping today to start eating Primal/Paleo and hope the weight will come off faster. I would love to hear about other experiences with it.

I am not a Crossfitter but I had a question or two for you...

Do you go to a Crossfit gym? We have one a few blocks away and I am completely interested but also completely intimidated! Do you scale it yourself? You are very brave for joining as a beginner - I don't have the courage yet.

I do scale things. Some girls that have been there about a year still scale 1 or 2 things. Like handstand push-ups. I put my feet in bands with my pullups, use boxes for handstand pushups, step-ups instead of box jumps etc. I almost had a full prescribed workout last week. Everyone there is so encouraging. You should go check it out. At least do a trial workout. It is worth the extra money for me and very motivating. I am still amazed at how good I felt within the first few weeks. My gym is like a small family and everyone looks forward to seeing everyone for the WOD (workout of the day). Try it and let me know what you think.

I've been going since January. I love it! I am definitely stronger than when I started. I still scale a lot of things. I love that Crossfit is so flexible like that! I go to a gym near my house once a week (can't really afford more right now). I need to be more motivated to do the WOD at home. My diet could be better as well. I've been transitioning to TF for quite awhile (live with parents who eat SAD so its hard), and am trying to go more primal/paleo as I feel better that way.

Yes, the diet thing is the hardest for me. Still learning and trying to fit in paleo and TF for my husband and daughters liking. With good intentions, I never fully finish a WOD at home either. Something always pops up. I do get to go 4x a week though. Just moved up to that from 3x which was worth celebrating. I'm not as sore anymore. I have a crazy blood blister from a crazy pull-up wod yesterday. But I still crave more. I love Crossfit.

I love more intense exercises, and am tempted to try Crossfit. My concern, however, is that my knees have been sore ever since I foolishly squated 200 lbs when I was 18. I am worried that the intensity of Crossfit would destroy my knees. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks!

I think you should be fine. Tell the coaches that and they will work with you. There is a 60 year old lady where I go that could not even squat. She could barely bend her knees. Now she squats to a ball. You get so strong throughout your whole body quickly so I don't see a problem. Go for it!

just do a search for "CrossFit" and you'll find threads.

I know it has been a looooong while since this post started, but I finally joined a CrossFit gym! I went on Sat, Mon, and today. Whoa - I hurt. I love how they work with you and scale the workout. I really surprised myself today. Thanks for the inspiration!

just seeing this... I had done some CF before on my own but it was hard to keep motivation and also hard always modifying to exercises I did know how to do or had the equipment for- anyway- I am starting at a CF gym next week- I will be doing it 1x a week as the closest gym is 1h45 min away. Right now I am paid for 2 months getting through their beginner classes. I don't know past that as I I think that it is unlikely I would want to continue that much driving besides the cost I don't think I could swing.

However, I am excited to get some instruction to make sure I have good form as I know it is lacking in some areas. Also, I am hoping it is good motivation and helps kick start me.

I could certainly use some support. I don't know why but I'm scared as hell! I am afraid they are going to kill me. I have always loved working out in groups before but I don't know this is totally different.

Crunchy_Mama - That is a long way to drive to workout! You are dedicated!

I am completely unmotivated on my own, which is why the group thing really works for me. It seems like these gyms are really popping up these days so hopefully one will be located closer to you in the near future - or open one up yourself! Three years ago, there were none in my town and now there are 3.

Let us know how your first week goes! I am still intimidated but everyone is so encouraging. I have gone 3 times this week already and will be going again tomorrow. They aren't going to kill you...just make you hurt a little more than maybe you would hurt yourself

Bad thing is suddenly I have lost my motivation to work out this week- I have not been doing good at all. I am hoping the amount of money I just paid will help keep me dedicated!

Money is a great motivator. But just show up. Make an agreement with yourself to get dressed and show up and you can leave after 5 minutes if you still don't want to be there. Just show up!

Cross fit is wonderful! I did the free trial but I already had a gym membership and it's such a great deal. This was much more money and there was just no way!

I'm guessing it will. Plus, good trainers make you feel great. I'd say just get yourself there. Just tomorrow. Worry about one day at a time! The workouts are FUN and that will keep you coming back for more.

I have my first time set up for next WEd. Still didn't work out today but dh and I are alone w/ the baby so it is nice to have some time just relaxing after a few very busy weeks.

Great that you set the date! I agree - the hardest part for me is just getting there. Once I am there, no sense in slacking! I actually come up with my schedule for the week ahead. I know that this week, I will be working out on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, with a run on Saturday. I just plan that out and schedule it with DH so he knows when he has to stay with DS. It really helps because then I stay committed to the schedule.

So, I had my first day. It was challenging but doable. I really liked my trainer he was encouraging but held good expectations. I was so nervous! Well, evidently I am awesome at squats( I can squat easily to the floor from years of yoga) so I have that going for me. He did have me tweak a few things w/ my squat and although it was such small things I feel it so much more now than I did. I really struggled w/ getting some of the movements right like for deadlifts and shoulder press- just little tweaks that I need to get down.

I did pushups- I was concerned my form wasn't quite right but evidently I am doing fine there- just have to make sure I don't hang my head down to much which evidently I have a tendency to do. I need to certainly build my strength though! We went over basic moves just to go over form. Then I did a small workout- 15-12-9 - squats, pushups and pullups (pull-ups kind of vertical from the rings- was VERY challenging!).

I have a tabata workout 2 complete 2 x between now and next week. And I plan to through in some other things as well. I need to take my before pics tomorrow.

I am looking forward to next week when I won't be so nervous it is hard to focus with that. Then of course they timed the workout- I hate being timed- being timed on anything freaks me out for some reason and I just seem to goof up.

How is it going for you Jend?
Hey crunchy_mama! Sounds like you are off to a great start. I went for my 5th workout yesterday, and finally walked in with no nerves. I have to agree that being timed is not my favorite thing. We do some workouts that are AMRAP - as many reps as possible for a set amount of time. I seem to like that a lot better. Try to ignore the time and just focus on the exercises if you can. I have accepted that I will probably be last to finish for a while, so I try to put the time out of my mind.

I took a before pic as well. I would have liked to do measurements too - and I am sure not that much has changed yet, so I probably still could.

Do you do pull ups with an exercise band for assistance? There is no way I could do a pull up without the band right now. And I still have a lot of form things to learn. Yesterday we were doing kettlebell snatches and I had a hard time getting the motion down.

Keep me posted on your workouts! I am glad to have someone else to chat with about it.

The kettleballs sound really cool, we are just doing basics. But it is good as that is what I wanted. It is hard to explain the pull-up move. There are hanging rings and I am doing a pullup from that but not from directly underneath it- I am horrible at explaining. It is one of those things that looks so much easier than it is. Same w/ the squats- I can do them all day long but the way they are having me do them with just a few changes I could really feel it more. I totally stunk yesterday at pushups!

I will be anxious to do some of the AMRAP workouts as well. And I think once I am not so nervous I will probably do a lot better as well.

What do you do on your off CF days? He told me he wanted me to rest for today or keep it pretty simple. I am thinking I would like to keep w/ sprinting once a week and some walking and such here and there.

Did tabata last night- pushups and squats. Totally brutal and pathetic. I just had the stomach flu Thurs though, so that is not helping me out! I hope to do some kind of activity today but not sure how brutal the heat is going to be.
