Help me make a new baby gift bag

One of my very good friends just had her little baby girl at home with a midwife. I would LOVE to get her a great gift bag together. My dd is 3 and time tends to make you forget all of those things that you really needed and loved when your lo was so new, And so many new things have come out.

What would you not live without?What are your top needs and wants? Or what would you suggest for gifts?

I was thinking about getting her a dozen prefolds, and a couple of covers, and she has quite a few baby carriers already. Small things that make a big impact would be great, and things that i might be able to find here locally at a store would be even better.

Finally, something specifically for your friend for having such a great birthing experience. Moms often get forgotten in the whole having kids process, and I think she should be appreciated.

a pair of Robeez or those ministar booties


My SIL brought me a beautiful basket when DS was born last fall filled with nice lotion, organic body wash, some nice flour sack dish towels, some 7th gen sposies, and a load of bakery items from our local bakery. It was great, good food and wonderful usable items.



I know kinda spendy but a Moby wrap is my fave thing I didn't have for DD

my favorite most indespensible item(s) (which was recommended by someone here!) were nursing tanks from target. ugh, they are the best when yer boobs are all different sizes, bras are uncomfortable and gave me no support anyway, and they're super comfy to wear to sleep in too. i still wear them at night now that the bazoombas are too large to be dangling just any old place.

I would get a few California Baby products (Target sells them). Nursing pads are good, too (my favorite disposables are Lansinoh, she might want them even if she is using cloth ones).

Yes to this! The Lansinoh cream (at Target, too) is also great!

Although I don't use them the rest of the time, I like the wet, ready to use face wash/wipes for times when I didn't have time to shower. The lansinoh pads and Target bras were favorites of mine, as with Bordeauxs butt paste. I love the zip-front organic sleepers from Hannah Andersson. SO nice to not have all those snaps... Maybe a gift certificate for a massage for the mommy? I had someone come to the house after my first was born. Amazing!

If you're near a Costco, see if they have any of the Hanna Andersson organic sleepers. Ours does right now... my step-mom just went on a shopping spree for all the babies in the family!

Anyway, I'd stay away from baby clothes, especially if she already has a child. I've got onesies coming out my ears!

Someone gave me some Aidan and Anais blankets and they're really nice, but I also just like my Carters receiving blankets (though the ones I got this time are already shabbier than the ones I got with DD1).

I love the idea of a sun hat, as well as toiletry items for mama and baby. How about a bottle of vitamin D?

They've also, since DD1 was born, come out with some nice feeding things that aren't plastic. I received a wooden bowl and spoon as a gift--totally mainstream, too. I think I later saw them at Babies R Us!

Books for herself or to read to baby
Gift certificate to Target or someplace else she likes to shop to get last minute things or just whatever she wants
Photo frame
Baby bath items...baby soap/shampoo, hooded towel and washcloth, bath toys, etc.

Yes!!! Definitely food!!! Even 8 weeks pp, I barely have time to cook! When i do, homemade granola bars & scones are my faves right now.

There are some great homebirth slogan baby clothes on cafepress - I especially like this one. There's tons more.

My favorite pp baby gifts were older baby and toddler stuff! You get all newborn stuff at a shower, then 6 months down the road you realize you have no baby spoons, sippy cups, or teethers. I had a "stash" from a friend that I could dig into when I needed it. It was great!

And mama gifts:
- gc for a massage or chiro adjustment (I loved going to the chiro pp!!!)
- aromatherapy bath stuff
- belly/stretch mark cream
- FOOD - my favorite was a frozen homemade mac & cheese someone made - already in the baking dish - I just had to throw it in the oven. Marvelous!!!

I would have loved one of those kits where you make a cast or print of your newborn's foot. My LO is already so big I have a hard time remembering how tiny she was!

ETA: how about a GC to a good online baby-organics store?
Or a box of Mother's Milk Tea?
Or, how about a bottle of special laundry soap for cloth diapers? (I washed mine in Dreft for the first couple of months and almost ruined them. That's what I get for ignoring laundry instructions!!!

Laundry Basket. That is hands down the most useful thing I got for the LO. Bath time , laundry time, naked baby time, tired of wearing the carrier but still need to move the baby and get stuff done time, you get the picture.
I plan on packing all my baby shower gifts in laundry baskets from now on.

small things that no one else listed:
a drool bib
a teething ring (i like the avent/ or a razzberry)
a coupon for you to watch the babe so mamma can go on a date or do housework, etc.
a lovey

Some really nice mommy-gifts I've given or liked myself:

bath soak, box of chocolates, small nice hand sanitizer and or lotion for the diaper bag, bag of coffee (or tea, if she prefers).

Lots of nice ideas already for babe stuff. If you sew/make stuff I do really love having stuff for the babe that was handmade by someone. I also often give out cloth wipes (even to people who don't use cloth diapers) - they're terribly useful and you can't have too many.
