Would you still eat this?

I bought some nice organic sour cream yesterday afternoon around 4:45. I completely forgot about it in the bag until I woke up to pee at 3:00 am. Of course, it wasn't cold any more, but I put it in the fridge anyway. Would you still use it? Or should I throw it?

I'd give it a whiff test and if it passed... eat it.

The nose knows!

Yeah. It's sour cream. I mean, it really has to be bad for it to bad, ya know?

I would not. I'm very conservative with refrigeration issues. I'm gotten one too many bouts of food poisoning.

I wouldn't. But that's because I'm a little neurotic about food safety issues. Probably if it tastes the way it should, then it's fine, unless it was sitting in direct sunlight or in a hot car or something like that. But I still wouldn't...

same here. I would have thrown it away, for sure.

As a PP noted, if it was not in direct sunlight or in a hot car, then it should be fine.

If it does not smell or taste off, then

I would, as long as it smelled and tasted fine. I'd probably finish it off very quickly, wouldn't want it to sit around in the fridge too long before it's all gone.

I would. I once read an essay by a guy who was well-educated, once quite successful, and later found himself homeless. He described in detail about how he foraged for food in trash cans, and considered himself lucky when he would find sealed yogurt and other dairy products because it keeps for a good while.

I'd eat it. sour cream is cultured, IIRC, so in that case definitely.

I would. It's already sour and its environment makes it very hard for anything to grow in it. That's why sour cream is usually still good months after it's "use by" date. I wouldn't throw it out unless it's gotten moldy. Yogurt, cheese, sour cream... these all came about from people who were trying to preserve dairy for extended periods without refrigeration.

Thank you all for your replies!! I've decided to keep it and use it quickly. Although, I'm still trying to bring myself to open it and give it a taste! Maybe I'll just use it in cooking and not eating on something.
