What to give baby in lieu of whole milk?

I was only able to get my son to 1yo breastfeeding and now he is 13months, and at that age where the docs want you to give them whole milk as a transition. We are vegan and I would give him the milk, but I am really concerned (even with organic, etc.) about it and would really rather not. However, I know that the fat is the biggest concern, since they need it for brain development - so soy/rice milk aren't going to cut it (not that I want him to consume to much soy anyway). Since ideally he would be getting the fat from breast milk does anyone have any ideas as to what we should do?

Thanks a ton for your ideas, in advance!

I care for a 13 mo and she doesn't drink any milk any more. She just drinks water. And she's not even vegan.

If you are concerned you could do coconut milk but why not just have a good amount of fats in her diet? olive, flax oil, avocado, nuts/seeds, tahini, hummus.

Our son really likes hemp milk the best. It has Omega 3, 6s, calcium, protein, Vit. D, etc. and tastes good. We buy the Living Harvest brand. It's got a little sugar, but is nutritious and we all like it. http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/n...report#product

Here's another page too that talks about all the benefits of hemp milk in general:

We also give him a liquid DHA/Omega 3 supplement from time to time in a smoothie.

Nettles infusions are so yummy and my dd drank it and begged for more when she was 2. I did nurse her till age 2 though. Nettles has tons of minerals but no fat though. You will have to find that elsewhere.

We alternated between hemp milk and soy milk from the time ds was 16 months old to about 2 years old. From 2 yo to now (he's 2 years 4 months), he drinks about 16 oz of soy milk, 8 oz of diluted juice and the rest of the time water each day on average. He loves avocados, nuts, nut butters and we made smoothies with coconut milk (still do), so fats weren't an issue. Seems to be a-ok according to the pediatrician, whom he rarely sees except for wellbaby visits Good luck!
