BFing Mom & Babe, when Dad has food sensitivities ... ?

I already polled the midwife, he's asking the naturopath tomorrow, but I wanted to check personal experiences too ...

We're due "any minute" and plan to breastfeed. It's my first (so excited).

Last week, we found out that he has significant food sensitivites (did the blood test, A1E or A1g or something): Egg white and yolk, cow whey, casein, peanuts, almonds. Cheddar and mozzarella, along with goat cheese, are OK.

So ... do I need to limit the foods that HE is sensitive to, while I breastfeed our son? For how long, and to what degree?

At what points, and how, do I "check" to see if our son is tolerant to my eating these things?

We're waiting on my results ... with our luck, I'll be sensitive to goat milk, cheddar, and mozzarella

As a rule, the most common food/protein for a baby to be sensitive to through breastmilk is dairy/casein, peanuts, and tree nuts. I would consider removing casein/dairy before LO arrives and introducing it later. IMHO, it's much easier to eliminate now rather than when DC appears to be having a reaction. It can take as long as 2 weeks to eliminate completely proteins from your system as well as DC's.

My DS is highly sensitive to multiple foods through my breastmilk but he is not allergic. I saw some improvement within a couple days, but it took a full 15 days before DS finally seemed completely comfortable.

Thank you. The midwife suggested I limit, and then only eat every few days and see what happens. I'm a dairy fiend so while I've been warned hard not to eliminate now (at 38+weeks) I'm cutting back. Strangely I've had an aversion to peanuts and almonds as it is.

Anyway - I appreciate the real life testament.

Aversions or extreme cravings for foods are often our body's way of trying to get a message to us about food allergies/sensitivities, either in our self or in the babe's we are carrying.

I would avoid the things you can and limit as much as possible now.

My DD was dairy sensitive for 10ish months so I cut out all dairy, whey, casein, and trace. I am sensitive as well (but not to the extent that she was) and my DH was very sensitive as an infant...was only breastfed for 6 weeks and had to be put on soy formula when his mom made the switch (was vomiting up regular formula).
