My daughter and I have been happily eating allergy free for the past 17 months and just TODAY found out that she has no food allergies at all. Instead she has FPIES, or food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome. I'm just learning about this.
My daughter is 19 months old and was exclusively breastfed (and still nurses). The "allergies" showed up at two months and resolved when I changed my diet. It seems that sensitivity to mothers' milk is unusual with FPIES and usually develops due to formula or solid foods.
She eats many solids now, but we both avoid dairy, soy, wheat, and eggs. We were told to avoid nuts because they are common allergens. I guess we can eat nuts now. DD also has problems with lentils (I see legumes are common culprits and we've avoided them since the lentil debacle, thank goodness!) but she grew out of the rice issue she had previously.
Her allergist said that he usually sees FPIES resolve by 18 months and that we should try adding these foods back into her diet. We're trying wheat first. But everything I read online warns against trying this at home and says it usually resolves at 3 years, not 18 months. I'm a bit nervous to try it...
Does anyone else have FPIES in their family? This is a completely new thing for me. Any support would be wonderful!
Thanks,
Dana
