Not having a 1st Birthday party?

So...we may not have a 1st Birthday party for our son. The reasons because our families don't live near us, except my mom, who lives 5 hours away and said she would come up. But my inlaws live about 8 hours away and when I mentioned having a party my MIL expressed no interest what so ever, which hurt my feelings but whatever ( and even though she will be travelling through multiple states to go to here other grandson's 1st birthday, but that's a whole 'nother topic)

Most of our friends don't have kids or their kids are grown and we just haven't had time to make a lot of new friends.

My idea was for us to go camping together as a family for our DS's 1st birthday instead. That way it will be memorable for us and hopefully fun and interesting.

I am feeling a bit sad that we don't have a huge group of friends or family or other children to invite to a 1st birthday party. Not sad for myself, but sad for my DS.

Has anyone else not had a 1st Bday party and not regretted it?

We haven't had any for our three either. We took them each for a family dinner (more for us than them obviously ) and made family memories. We don't have family antwhere nearby and are in the same boat - most of our friends have either much older kids or they have just recently started families. Ours are now 11, 13, and 16 and they are ok!

Awww, I'm sorry. I can see you're disappointed and I get it. My daughter is four. All the kids in our neighborhood are in daycare or school, all my friends have much much older kids. She's not in a lot of activities because there aren't many and she has had some health issues. She LOVES other children so much and every year when her b-day rolls around, I feel terrible that I can't produce a bunch of kids for her.

Will this be his first camping trip? First camping trip for a first birthday sounds AWESOME - it sounds like the beginning of a great family tradition!

We are having a pretty small party. We just moved from Washington to Florida and have one friend with one child. My parents will also be visiting. I have only been to a few events but I am putting an invite out to the AP group I'm a part of...maybe someone will come!

I've been to first birthday parties where it was all adults, so if you want to have a party, have one! I think the camping trip sounds awesome though!

We don't have family in the area, so we didn't have one for our guy. And we aren't big into sweets so we didn't do a cake or anything. Mostly, I was okay with it because I don't think he noticed one way or another. But we did plan to go out to eat and someone suggested a restaurant to us that ended up being gross and yucky so my original idea of a low key nice day, went one step below that to too low key and not special enough. We are so out of it - we didn't even get any cute pictures. This happens too often with me - I want to do low key and casual (for instance, my wedding) but then it gets TOO low key and TOO casual. I figure he will be much more into his second birthday anyway. But a good note to self to step things up a notch so that I don't regret it later when it goes down a notch....

Camping sounds fun! If you want to do a party, just do it with your friends, whom I am sure love your son even if they don't have kids. Hold a bbq and then just sing "happy Birthday" and do cake. I understand about the family disapointment, but as long as he is surrounded by people who love him, that is all that matters. Enjoy the special day!
