What are some of your favorite food trigger memories?

When I was about 3/4 my mom ran into a snowbank while we were on our way home from the grocery store.

My sisters and I sat in the back of the car and ate vanilla wafers and milk until my uncle got there to dig us out. Vanilla wafers always remind me of that, sitting in the back of the car giggling surrounded by snow but warm and cozy. I thought it was AWESOME at the time but if it happened to me as a parent I am sure I would not be very happy about it.



What are some of your favorite food trigger memories? Not just comfort foods but things that trigger a single memory?

When I was a kid, my uncle owned a bakery in a small, rural-ish town. When I was visiting one time (I must have been around 10 or so), I got to spend the morning with him in the bakery. The coolest thing was making the donuts--I have a vivid memory of getting this giant wooden stick and using it to flip the donuts over in the massive vat of boiling oil. Man, that was fun! And we got to eat some donuts when they were done. The smell of freshly made donuts triggers this memory every time and brings a smile to my face.

When I was a child in Brussels, a friend had a summer house in the South of France and we used to go visit sometimes. In the morning, she and I would be up early and we had permission to go to the neighbouring farm to get the morning's milk. Once, we got there just after the milking...the milk was still warm from the cows and the farmer ladled us this lovely creamy warm milk to drink.

When I have the opportunity to taste 'real' milk...not the supermarket altered stuff, the taste and texture brings me back to that moment.

When I was a kid we would buy cherries from farm stands and then eat them driving home in my moms mini van, throwing the stems out the window and spitting the pits after...cherries ALWAYS remind me of this...its actually still my fav way to eat them!

When I was a kid my dad's family gathered at my grandma's house. My dad's family is big and loud and very loving. My favorite food there was the sweet potato casserole with coconut in it and it was topped with a cooked down mix of maraschino cherries and crushed pineapple, dyed bright red. I'd gorge myself on this stuff. Whenever I taste it I remember those days and feel safe and comforted and surrounded by love.
