if your had a long first labor...how was the 2nd? - Page 2

post #21 of 31
My first was 38 hours first contraction to birth, my second was 28 hours. Both had very long early easy stages before moving in to slightly longer than normal active labors and short pushing stages.

This was definitely true for me. My first labor was long and hard; 15.5 hours including 2.5 hours of pushing. My midwife kept warning me during my second pregnancy that labor could go much more quickly but I didn't really believe her. On my DD's birth day, after sex and a nap, I woke up and 2.5 hours later my DD "flew out".

#1 17 hours, 20 min pushing
#2 9 hours, 5 min pushing
#3 7 hours, 5 min pushing

The biggest difference between 1 and my other 2 was how fast I went from 5-10cm ... in about an hours time I went from "your only 5 cm" to baby coming out...

With my first it took me 3-4 hours to go from 5-10...

My first two were induced. From start to finish, first was about 34 hours and my second was about 7 hours. Both were an easy 5 minutes of pushing, even though the first was 7lb9oz and the second was 9lb2oz!

I do think the fact that I had an epidural with the first played a big part.

First 6lbs 6 oz.- twinges to birth = 27hrs
Pushing = 2hrs
Second 7lbs 11oz. - twinges to birth = 9hrs
pushing = 10 min.

#1 - 28 hours of back labor (he was probably posterior), 3 1/2 hours of pushing
#2 - 3 1/2 hours total, with 4 minutes of pushing.

I also noticed a huge difference in how I dialated. With #1, I labored at home for about 5 hours and got to the birth center at only 3cm. After 6 hours, I was only 6 cm. I then stayed at 6 cm for another 6 hours until I finally transferred to the hospital and got pitocin and an epidural. With #2, I labored at home/in the car for about 3 hours, got to the birth center at 6 cm and was pushing 25 minutes later.

My first labor was 37 hours. 18 hours of hard active labor. OP baby.

My second was 8 hours of active labor. Never really had 'early' labor. Nuchal hand.

I think I have pretty good labors for comparison (homebirths, no induction, near EDD, optimal fetal positioning):

Labor 1: 48 hours of prodromal labor, followed by 6 hours active labor (approx. 45 min pushing) DD 1 = 7lb15oz

Labor 2: No prodromal labor, 3 hours from start to finish (approx. 20 min pushing) DD2 = 8lbs15oz

My pregnancies and births have been described as "textbook" and "boring" by my midwives.... lol

#1: hospital birth, 27.5 total hours from PROM to birth. But only 10 or 11 active labor.

#2: UC, less than 4 hours from start to finish. ROM at crowning.

1st: 20 hrs from first real contraction, born at 40w 3d
2nd: 3.5 hrs total, at 41w 3d

The first was slow-and-steady and the 2nd was intense. Contractions started out at 5 min apart and picked up from there. I got to the hospital at 8 cm and ds was born a little over an hour later.

i AM a little worried that it could be faster this time. 3 hrs was just about perfect.

Haven't had a second yet, but my first was 43 hours labor, 1 hour pushing. I'd love it if my labor was cut in half next time! 21 hours seems heavenly Yeah, short is relative!
