15 month old choking on....air?

My DH has this problem too.

DD will just be doing whatever and suddenly start coughing and gasping for breath as though she is choking. She's not eating or drinking anything. I am right there so I know she's not putting something in her mouth. She usually gets past it with minimal intervention (ie, just patting her back or giving a small drink of water) but it's really annoying! And I can tell she doesn't enjoy it either...

This happens at least once a day. I'm wondering if it's more frequent while teething because I know she is, but there is not much drool so it must be going somewhere! She has always done it though.

Anyone else had this problem? Anything I can do about it, or do I just keep patting her back and hoping she'll learn how to breathe properly at some point?

sometimes I choke on my own saliva...it's embarrassing. I don't think there's anything you can do about it except wait for it to pass.

My mom does this when she is eating. She isn't necessarily eating too fast, but something happens and she starts coughing. Her Dr. said it was acid reflux. ??? My DH has acid reflux too, but he never chokes up like my mom. IDK.

I would mention it to your doctor, sounds like there might be some oral motor planning issues. I don't think you are supposed to pat a choking person on the back either.

I don't know if I would say she is choking so much as coughing, like when you swallow something the wrong way. Certainly doesn't require heimlich or anything.

Both my DH and my dad have this problem and dad has acid reflux and DH has mucus problems that we can't figure out.

I think I'll double check w/ the doctor. I don't think she has any motor planning problems, at least not that I can tell.

Sounds like some saliva got inhaled by accident then. I do this at least once a month. I know people who do it more often and it's caused by nothing more then a bit too much spit when you breath in.

Both my dad and I are really sensitive to inhaling saliva and having it tickle and cause massive coughing fits. We're not sick, we're not choking, and it's pretty embarrassing, but... at least I come by it honestly .

I'd mention it to the doctor because it could be something, but it might just be nothing, too.

athsma? or allergies? or yeah just choking on drool.

I ddi that when I was little and when I was 4 we found out it was because of my athsma I had a 'sensitive airway' or something like that.
