Mother's day NURSE-IN
Date: Sunday, May 9, 2010
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: Lindale Mall - Kids play place area ( by sears)

Description.A nursing mother was harrassed by a Cedar Rapids Lindale mall security Guard, Jay Stevens, and asked to nurse her child in the Family Restroom, instead of the play place in the mall.

He claimed that it was because people were uncomfortable and there were children nearby.

He was respectfully educated on the Iowa Law that states a mother may nurse her child wherever she is allowed to be. There is also a federal law that protects the right of a mother to nurse her child wherever she is legally authorized to be.

We cannot allow people to harrass nursing mothers.

You do not need to be a nursing motherto participate, come out and show your support for nursing mothers!!

Here's a blog post about it.

I can't believe they egged her house?!?!

Be sure to click on the poll and vote that woman should be allowed to nurse in public in Iowa!

Holy Crap!! Almost makes me wish I still lived in Nebraska so I could be there. Almost...

BUMP! I will be there with my kids! We need as many mommies there as we can!

The thread would probably have gotten a lot more interest if it was titled, "woman's house egged for NIP". I hope the nurse-in goes well tomorrow!

I'm just speechless. WTC is wrong with people? I reposted the article on facebook.

I've got family near Cedar Rapids. Knowing their feelings on nursing in general, much less (gasp!) in public, I'm not surprised.

But didn't the mall management, when told, react appropriately? I don't get the nurse-in.

Agreed.

I am just confused. I've nursed there dozens of times in the past. Never an issue. As a matter of fact, I've nursed dozens of places, countless times in CR and never once had an issue.

It's unfortunate that this is painting CR to be so archaic. (which is ironic I'd be saying that, since I'm not a huge fan of this city in the first place. lol)

It's also very unfortunate that ignorant people have harassed this mama. Ug.

http://www.kcrg.com/news/local/93243894.html

nobody once admitted that the security guard was in the wrong. the mangement maintained that he was simply telling her there was a family restroom. that was not what he did at all.

So, Ladies - how did it go? (In case that's a news link in the previous post: it probably won't open for me. Chinese internet, ya know.)

It sounds like it was a lovely day. A few dozen moms and babies/children is what the link reported.

The link also made it sound as though the mall handled the situation beautifully from the start and didn't include anything about how horribly people responded to the mom and what happened to her though. So it made the moms at the nurse-in seem as though they over-reacted.

there were at least 65 people there not counting the kids. the news did not report that the mom's house was egged or the comments that were left on the website (before they disabled comments). the mall did apologize that they had an incident but maintained that the security guard was merely trying to offer her the family room (on the other side of the mall). but that is defintiely not how he said it.

all in all it was very nice day. there were lots of moms and dads and hopefully we made a point.

I just saw this peaceful parenting post and was coming here to put it up. Glad it was already here. everybody vote in the poll mentioned, yes is at 69% now. http://www.drmomma.org/2010/05/cedar...er-mother.html I don't live near there. I think as long as people have such weird, anti- life reactions to a woman feeding their child or baby in public, having a show of strength in numbers is good. Once I heard of a phenomenon where via twitter or facebook, people would show up at a particular place and do a particular thing, recently it was dancing maybe (yep I'm old, lol). We should do a thing like that. Anyone know how to organize this? I NIP anytime I am out, but that isn't often, and I have never been harassed. I do it at parks and where children are on purpose to show them what is real. I have sensed weird vibes from women at a particular children's museum, but that is their hang up, not mine.
